  • Lake Buhlow Alexandria/Pineville, LA (History, stories, pics, vids, memories, etc.)

This race site is rich in racing history. So many greats over the years have planed out across it's surface. I would very much enjoy seeing/hearing some of YOUR memories, stories, history, photos, videos, etc. (Anything at all! Haha.) from Lake Buhlow. I know that there have been many posts throughout a few different racing forums about this location and some of it's past.. But I would like to start this as a new topic and see where it goes.

This particular race site is very dear to me. Living in central Louisiana my entire life.. I have hardly missed a race of any sort at Buhlow. (Stocks, mods, pros, inboards, tunnels, drags..) My family would spend all weekend watching whatever events were taking place here as long as I've been alive. I can remember during my youngest years.. (Early to mid 90s) Being at the far north point of the lake on the same side as the pits.. Even with turn 1. I would ride out with my father early in the week or early the morning of race day and he would push mow the grass down a bit so we could get around the vehicles better. We would get there early enough to enjoy all the testing taking place pre-race. We'd stay from the time the first boat cranked off to make test laps that morning until the last heat of racing was finished that evening.. Usually as the sun was already even with the horizon. I remember enjoying many a race weekend sitting on the tailgates of trucks on that point with my father, grandfather, two uncles, and my cousins. Always dreaming that maybe one day I would be lucky enough to do it as well. My grandfather raced B Hydro way back in the day (was one of the best in area) so I grew up hearing his stories and seeing his trophies.. And that just drove home the fact that this was something I REALLY wanted to do. I built racing boats out of Legos and if there wasn't a real life race happening on a given weekend.. I was racing on my grand parent's coffee table all weekend long. And I couldn't be distracted! Haha. I had a schedule to keep. I can remember asking my grand mother if I could be late to supper one night because I still had the 2nd heat of A Runabout to race. Haha. It was an absolute dream come true when my father surprised me with the fact that he had bought a race boat for me. A, at the time, white Campise (sp?) Hydro and a Yamato 80. After a year or so of owning this rig.. We finally took it out to Buhlow one warm November morning in 2002 and I got to take my first laps in it. As if I wasn't already mentally hooked on this sport enough.. This completely infected me with the boat racing bug. We would make many trips back out to Buhlow over the next year just to play basically. We started to acquire more equipment and boats, etc. from ex-racers in Louisiana and before we knew it.. We had a trailer with multiple rigs. In August of 2003.. My father felt I was ready to race. The NBRA Nationals were in Pineville the same weekend as my birthday. We made this as our debut to the racing scene. I raced A Hydro, A Runabout, and B Runabout that weekend. We even lucked out and got a win in A Runabout. My Uncle Randy, who had been gathering equipment and so forth over the last few years as well would end up making his debut at Buhlow the very next year at the co-hosted NBRA/AOF race in May. He too would score his first win that weekend in 102 Stock Hydro.

This race site truly built a dream for me.. And it then became the avenue with which my family could take to make that dream come true. I've shared many great family moments there and many great racing moments there as well. I can't tell you how many times I've gone out for a drive and then find myself parked lake side at Buhlow reminiscing..

I can't wait to be back out there this year.

If I remember correctly.. My Uncle Randy actually won the first ever drag racing event on Buhlow in one of my Uncle Sonny's old boats back in the day as well.

It's been a tough night and past couple days! Me and dad were there in 2008, and had a great time! Pop is sick, but me and dad took the 20ssh there and had a great time! Lost his teeth on Saturday due to the wind storm, but found them Sunday before we left. What a great time! I love my dad! Jimmy

Most fun I had when I started racing... Was "pit guy" for Bob Dunlap HotRod powered ASR/BSR for a few years and bought my first racing engine, a 25XS, from Steven Zachary at that race. Returned and raced it a couple years, too.
I believe johnml390 used my kevlars & jacket for his first "real ride" during testing one day. The guys put me in Tab Buford's runabout and I beat Rotten Ralph Cook & Bad Burt Hoefs with it. Best turning runabout I ever drove! (I think they MAY have let me win?)
It was quite a shock to see, in the early 2000's, boat racers wearing cowboy boots, cut off jean shorts, no shirt & a cowboy hat ! What a fashion statement!
Jeff & Skip Carter loaned me a hydro to run my 25XS before I had my own boat.
The Snell Bros. were a wealth of knowledge & stories. Great memories...

Note: I lost the black bag for my lifevest at Lake Buhlow... It was embroidered with "STEWART". Would love to get it back even though it's been so many years.

Yessir! We brought my first rig out there in 2003 to the AOF Hot Rod Worlds and my father talked with David Guadagnoli and Tony Staron a good bit and got me permission to take some practice laps on an actual set up race course. Since AOF had control of the lake and it was an official testing day.. I had to have all proper safety gear on. I didn't yet own anything. (Had been using a motorcycle helmet and ordinary boating life jacket up until that point.)

I really appreciate you allowing me to borrow your gear that evening! It was pretty exciting being out on an actual course for the first time that day.

Our first time there we were one of the first to have a cart. We parked near the boat launch. We were testing and all of a sudden a person came up to us and asked if we had a chain? I asked him why he needed a chain and all he did was point to the ramp. I didn't see anything right off the bat so we kept testing. A little while later there was a guy who came and asked us if we had seen a guy cutting the grass on a tractor. Well ding ding the light went on and if you looked hard enough you could just see the tip of the stack of the tractor sticking out of the water. I asked him if there would be a job opening as I was looking for one. He never commented.
That same weekend we were testing on a nice big turn cource that they had all setup for records. If my memory serves me I think it was a NOA race. I had a runabout with a side fin on it at the time. One of the first with a true sponson for it. It was interesting to see how thay changed the race cource to a 2 pin turn the next day saying that it was the true surveyed cource and the other was just for testing on.
          Never went back after that.

Sounds like the side fin runabout wasn't being well received back in the day. Haha.

My memories of Lake Buhlow are not that great....went to winternationals there in 2006 with a d stock hydro only to find out night of drivers meeting that d drivers were not going to race because of a new Tohatsu in our race trailer.....boycott caused damage to class that is still felt to this day. But....it sure is a cool place to race......

I remember that.. Had super confused during the drivers meeting.

Really appreciate you making such a long trip regardless. I believe I might have met you that weekend.

If you ever get the chance and availability.. Should try and make one of the NBRA events. D Hydro is literally the biggest field of boats we have now. Such a big and fun class. You'd be sure to have a nearly full field no matter which event you were to make. (Would definitely need eliminations at our Nationals.) If you're ever able and wish to that is.

USTS held a couple of races here maybe around 2004-2006. One Saturday evening following a great day of racing, I was headed to the hotel when I heard some singing down by the lake. I walked down towards the water to see what was going on. The Kugler race team and Litzells were well into a cooler full of cold Sangria!! They were singing the Oscar Meyer weiner song!!! Over and over.....

My first trip to "Alex" was in 1971 or 1972 for the NOA World Championships. A team from Sweden came over to race 250 hydro. The race was in August and it was unbelievably hot!!! Great racing featured many legends in PRO racing. I certainly hope there is an opportunity to race there again.

I was there watching both times in 2002 (I think) and 2004! We were trying to put together enough to run a random OSY 400 race in 2004 but only had myself, my Uncle and Brian Payn there to race it if so. Certainly hope to see you guys on Buhlow again sometime. Really enjoyed watching and helping out while y'all were here.

Remember the time when we watched a plane take off from the airfield, and watched it crash on the far side of the lake?

Very much so. Still one of the craziest things I've witnessed. I was on the back straight waiting for the black flag to be shown before making my way back to the pits when I noticed it off to the right of me. I was speechless!

Buhlow is where I first met you Mark. I knew you were bringing the brand new MJR but was a bit surprised to see it in a horse trailer! Also my first trip to Tunk's that year. Good times.

Mark was one of the good guys in racing. I was sorry when he retired a few years ago, Mark and Jack made a great team!
