  • 302 bore

Well, threw a ring in my 302 last weekend in the bottom cylinder. I cleaned everything honed the cylinder and got it ready to put new rings in it. However when I measured ring gap it measured .0023, top cylinder was .0013, this is clearly unacceptable.
I checked the bore which came 2.618". Not sure if this is beyond bigger rings or do I have to re-sleeve the cylinders? TJ tells me he has bigger rings that could work, but I'm not sure if that's possible since there is that much bore and gap. Also if this isn't to more bore what would be a maximum bore for a oversized cylinder? Thanks.

Do you mean a ring gap of twenty three thousandths (.023) or two thousandths and three tenths (.0023)? With a bore over 2.610, I would imagine you mean .023 ring gap. 2.618 is pretty big. I think the piston skirt is 2.597(?)

my bad I threw an extra 0 in there. I did mean .023 thousandths. And yes manual says 2.597.

2.168"-2.597"=0.021" piston-skirt clearance in the bore.

It's time for 1) an oversize piston, 2) plus a rebore, or 3) a new sleeve.

With the sloppy 0.021" piston-skirt clearance, your piston might try to change holes going up the backstretch!

I bored my 302 when clearances exceeded specs. I got (I believe) .020 over pistons from Ric. He also has generic rings that are a lot cheaper than the factory rings. They must be filed to fit.

You're getting too much play. Time to bore it for oversized pistons

Bore it oversize or buy a new block with std. sized liners then you can put the new liner/s in your old seasoned block.

Buy a new block? Where are you getting these new parts?
