Are steel turnbuckels allowed on steering cables to adjust cable tension?

Pretty sure they are not. If you go to indirect steering system there is no need for spring etc.

SS turnbuckles are used in the OPC classes and I/B's.
I am sure they are legal in SO if up to standard and lock wired
It will be the Inspector who calls it .
One in the system would solve many of the issues
we have getting proper tension.
I believe the reason we don't see them is weight and expense
(are OB'rs cheap.....???}
A good one from a sailing chandler will be $20-30 or so

OK, here is what I do not understand. I am working with a 102 with the stock,non folding steering bar. Even with the motor tilted up,you still do not have enough slack to hook/unhook the snaps going to the bar. How are you guys getting this adjustment? I must be missing something[not unusual]

-use a clevis with threaded pin rather than those carbine clips every one uses and must then tape closed
Safety wire or tie-loc the SS clevis
U only need one

Can you post a pic of your steering? Particularly, the anchor points for the steering cables. I think you have some geometry setup wrong. Those cables should become plenty slack when you tip the motor up.

They will un-hook when tipped up if you loosen up the transom clamps so it tips a little further and hook them from the bottom up.

Thanks Guys,I knew there had to be a simple solution,tilting the motor up more by loosening the transom clamps.

Consider using the folding steer bars, they are lighter and easier to deal with than the heavy stock Yamato bar. I run direct steer on my Yamato with clip on approved lock clip clamps and no issues getting on and off with engine tilted up without loosening transom clamps.
