More Great memories. One mistake though. The Mark Demaray Kilo record in 73 was never approved. I got the record in 74 at 60.884.

Do you have any pics of the Karelsen for that 60.884 record? Could you detail the engine height/angle and prop dims used?

Deano, ah yes I see where it was marked in blue in the archive "not approved", I edited the post. Also, I missed Donald Christy, and Brian Berger records and added them. The A classes sure were (and are) competitive!

I do have pictures but they are not available at this time.... They are in storage.
The boat was a special boat that Ed Karelsen built for straightaway..... Shallower sponsons and less lift than a competition boat.
Ed had built several of these, only for faster classes. This was the first one he built for ASH.
The motor was a KG4, Serial Number, 506879, completely stock no blueprinting, no squished heads, .015" over pistons, sand cast reed cage, .010" thick "thin reeds", Bendix mag, with a "scoop skeg" low water pick up gear case, like what came on the original 25ss motors, 1:1 gears of course..... My dad bought it off a fishing boat in Eastern Washington, it still had the seal on it.
I still have this motor... It is in storage also. The propeller was a Kamic, 48-23636, that R.Allen "Papa" Smith made. It was about
6 - 1/4" Dia. X 10 - 1/2" Pitch from his M Pitch Block. The prop shaft was about 1 - 1/8" above the bottom, and was kicked in about 2 - 3 degrees or about 1/8" in the length of a Dick Ficket kick-out tool. I could read 62 mph. My first run through was about 61.9 mph. This was in Feb. 1974, at Modesto...... We were blown out Saturday and Sunday..... But the race committee continued until Monday, and it turned out to be perfect water.
