I had a discussion with the Maker of ERC. Was very informative. There is legal stuff out there that stinks.Olesin additives. He stated he would take a look at suspected illegal fuel before you spend lots of money sending it off to a lab. They are in San Lorenso near Castro Valley Ca. That is the East Bay area near Oakand. 580 frwy. They do have a WEB site.

I raced go kart for 20 years. Have barried alot of friends ,racers from fuel additives.. some from mixing them, some from using them , some from running behind others using them, They are NOT WORTH It,, Liquid horsepwer KILLES!!!!!! We need to police ourself on this, there is always something that can get by the mointors or the officals out there for sale, but all have long term side effects. Beat me with this crap then die next year ,who won???? Just my two cents, I have race something for 35 years and plan to race another 20...

Very sorry to hear about your friends, Todd, but I'd be interested in specifics if you can, something solid stating that the fuel exposure was the direct cause of the fatal illness. I've known lots of guys from the 20-40% nitro days of the alky Mercs, whose fuel frequently had toluene and benzol and nitrobenzene and acetone and other fractions along with the methanol, nitro, and castor oil. And I never heard of any of them dying from the effects (though maybe somebody did and I just never heard about it). I really am not trying to be argumentative, and I'm not "in denial" because I just haven't heard about anything like the direct link you're talking about. I've heard more about racers contracting, and sometimes dying of, skin cancer caused by long summer raceday exposure to too much sun.

"Nitro Propane" is one Koltz name Karts use and nasty when staged at a start.
Besides cost of being competitive, It was one of the main reasons I have come back to MODIFIED boat racing.
If staging took more than 10 minutes wait for the previous class to finish my eyes watered so bad I could not see !
I would cut engine, unstrap harness, step out and drag my rig out of staging .

Does anyone have an idea what additive, legal or not, would produce a rotten egg smell when burnt? Also, this driver always seems extremely concerned about keeping their fuel cool? Thanks.

After almost 2 years this is still an issue? Is it an additive or some kind of oil being used to give off a smell. Isn't rotten egg smell sulphur?

APBA General Safety Rule # 27 is specific on illegal additives that are harmful to life. Serious penalties apply.

In my 30+ years of racing I'd never smelled anything like this before and my club had pro's in it for years so I'm used to the smell of castor and alcohol, etc... I'm just curious as both a racer and inspector.

A good start is a lot better and way more advantages than any fuel additive could be. Enough said.
