Congratulations to both Bob and John! John's entertaining write up describing how he watched his gps and knew he had the record reminded me of an idea I had for a new type of "gps record". Today straight away records are only set in places where the complicated scanners and timing equipment can be set up. If instead of running over a measured distance we ran over a measured time (10 seconds for example) and record the gps speeds with a data logger like a Micron the whole process would be much simpler. A club would only need to set a few buoys to define a chute and give the contestant a data recorder to carry in the boat. After the run a computer operator could determine the average gps speeds for 10 seconds in each direction from the recorded data. You could run straight away speed trials anywhere that you could set up a chute. No surveyors, no scanners.
