  • Transom Height for 55H

What is a good starting point for the transom height on a D-classic hydroplane for the 55H tower?

I have some old plans for a BEN-HUR which I never did end-up building and they recommend 13" transom height as a starting point for the 55H. The boat I have is Ron Collins old Burnscraft which I understand he ran his D-mod and his 44XS. Right now the transom height is 12". I think he indicated that the transom would need to be slightly higher for the 55H.

Mike, thanks for the feedback....are you running a 3 blade cleaver or 2 blade prop at that height?

I'm new at this and just wondering if you guys typically run the 3 blade cleaver props a little heigher?

I'm starting with a 2 blade prop I found on Ebay so it will be interesting to see how it performs with my boat .

Mike, I'm good for now...I have prop which I'm going to start with. Good to know you are close by. This spring when I get my lower unit from Dave S, I think I'll raise the transom height to 14" and then I can test with shims. I have a 3/8" aluminum plate which I'm going to use to raise the transom so I can easily adjust it back down if 14" is too high.

          I appreciate the feedback.

            14"

Dave;-you are wasting your time playing with a two blade if u intend to race that boat. It may work, and could be fast, but will never 'race' as fast as a three blade [fours are not legal DCH] 14" is the place to start [above the true bottom] Mike O runs higher, as he is dialed in, and is one of the top three DCHs in the country. If Mike made me an offer to help, I would be over there in a flash. Measure his best three props and let me know.
Ron Hill makes/sells a 'generic' D three blade for $100, which works well for some, and will give u base line data for ordering the prop u need.
Better yet, ask Dave Scott, or others who may know what Ron ran on that boat. Hope to see u out next year. We need some one to race with. Mike and his buds are way off in the distance, for now.

I hear ya Brian...if I had the cash I'd buy a low rake 3 blade cleaver right away. I got some good feedback from Dave S on a good size and pitch to go with. I at least have something to get started.

Yeah I think 14" should be good...I may even start with 13.5. I don't want to blow my motor on the first test run....I find the 2 blades tend to rev up a little higher at least with the recreational motors.

Look forward to get out to a few races next year. Brian, it was your initial feedback on Fralick's site which got me going on this and building my own race motor...I like the idea of D classic...these older Mercs are awesome. Thanks.

come on brian, give yourself a little credit. your giles DCH is a great boat and i'm sure u'll have a strong motor ready for next year. you just need the driver to be smart enough to get through the first corner in good position and i'm sure you'll have a rig that's on mike's back chine. but mike, i must admit you are going fast, giving doug a run for his money each time out.

                          Holy!!! WooHOO

OH OH!!! Do I see a DCH with a 20-CE on the side for next year as well....

Hey Dave G - Don't worry when you are ready I have lots of props we will get together and test that rig... We can maybe do a couple things to the boat to get her to stay up in the corners as well.... Just take two 1/4" plates and drill evenly spaced holes up each side. bolt them to the transom that you can adjust up and down for the height you need. You can install a block at the top for the riser... if not a set of Merc clamps with a piece of tube welded between the middle of them set to the extra height you need, then you can just clamp them on the existing transom and drop your motor on...

                          Regards,
