As promised, the "real" assembly work began this weekend as builders began gluing and fastening the transoms and bottom stringers to their boats. With a banquet being set up in the main floor area of the museum, we moved our week this work into the woodshop area. Our backdrops for inspiration this week were the Hurricane IV, which is in mid-restoration; and Bill Muncey's legendary "Blue Blaster" Atlas Van Lines, up on tilt and covered by a blue tarp.
New J Driver Shane Thompson received a lot of help this week from Jeff Kelly, and by the end of the session, it was hard to keep him off the drill drivers.
Jared Martin brought along his grandfather this weekend, so there were three generations working together on that boat.
The Raney's, Haskins and Scotts all made process on their boats.
Everybody seems to be benefitting from this project, even the veteran racers who are helping with the boatbuilding. Shared ideas and construction techniques were commonplace. And everyone took advantage of J-Dub's various ad-hoc "jigs and patterns" he built to measure cockpit and bottom widths and stringer spacing.
As word travels of the project, we have more guests and helpers stopping by. This week, even "Dr. Thunder" made an appearance; as did Stan, Scott, and Chip Hanauer.
This was Darrell Sorensen's final week on the project, as he headed back to the Chowchilla Raisin Farm today. Nest week, I suspect Myers, Kelly, Perman, Peterson and others will step up to help fill the void.
A few pics from this week are below....the rest can be found on this week's folder at http://community.webshots.com/album/503918194FvDuzD
