It is my understanding that cooling for the 102 is done by the prop forcing water thru a small hole in the tower. How is the water forced all thru the power head, exiting the 2 outlets on the side of the block? I attended the spring Lock Haven,Pa. race and as I was walking thru the pits,I had a conversation with a racer that had a 102 cooling problem. He stated he might need to get the foot reshaped for better cooling. My question is: If the motor cooled while racing in Japan, why is it not cooling properly now? I am a new racer just trying to understand the operation of my recently acquired 102 motor .

Question about cooling on a 102 motor

The propeller is throwing the water at the hole and forcing it through the powerhead for cooling purposes. We run the motors much higher than they do in Japan, therefore the water making it to the hole varies. There are lots of opinions on what you can do to try and get more. Personally I think gear case shaping does not do as much as some people think. However, different propellers can make a big difference.

Hello Mercsami,
The limit for CSH is that the center line of the prop shaft to be 3/4" below the bottom of the boat. I would suggest starting at say an 1 - 1/8" or 1" below, then jacking up with thin shims to the 3/4" limit to make sure you still cool your motor. Point your water exit tubes to the side so when you take a glance back you can see the water exiting out the motor.
Good Luck,
