  • Y302 water pick-up

i just bought a Y302 and i have recently heard the the Y302s can have some trouble picking up water. i've heard that it can be because of props but i have also heard you can re-route the water pick-up somehow to avoid this problem. does anyone have any details on this?

You can't touch the water pickup. But with the 1/2" rule, there shouldn't be a problem pumping water. We have done a lot of testing with the 302 before and after the height rule. You shouldn't have a problem, just keep an eye on those hoses to make sure.

        hydro or runabout

302 on a hydro does have a hystory of poor water pickup,, i tried a 302 on my hydro and when it wouldnt pick up I kicked it under little by little to like 5/8 under and still no water ,,then i went the other way and kick the motor out 1/8 and finally got alittle water but not much,, I have heard that afew boat builders are adding alittle plate off of the transom that trapswater and keeps more water in the area of pick up... the most success that i have heard of though is with props I heard that props are being built just for 302 and they help them pump better...just the info ive coolected hope it helps 302 has prodominatly been a runabout motor but ive heard more and more racers are making them work on hydros and doing a good job... best of luck

          Tunnels

I've had trouble with a 302 picking up water on a flat-bottom boat. It'll work but take a lot of prop testing. Example: Billy allen. I've Had no trouble on boats with tunnels in them. I've also put the same motor on an older Runnecraft with both a tunnel and the little plate and water was never an issue.

thats contradictory to what i've heard in the past because i have heard that the yamatos don't like tunnels yet a lot of the bezoats that i have seen with yamatos on the back of them all have then tunnels, and they run well. does having relief in the back of the boat create the same effect as having a tunnel or not?

Get a runabout and your problem is solved, the height below the bottom for runanouts is 3/4". I have run as high as 1/2" and never had a problem with water.

                little plate?

Does anyone have a pic or description of the transom plate trick?
I'm building a hull now, and would like to make provisions for it.
                Thanks

                    Cool and cooler

I run a Frailic C Hydro and have no problem with water pickup. The boat has a "V" shaped tunnel and I have spent some time at the front with no one to show me the way to the next corner, so I'm looking at the water tubes a lot.
My runabout by Fiberglass Matt has no problem as long as I keep it sunny side up.

I tried a runabout cleaver on a C hydro and cooked the water hoses. This prop gives a lot of tail lift which is what the problem was. I put my regular C hydro prop on with the same set up and every thing was fine. Test your boat and run a water hose from the outlet on the motor to the front of the boat by the throttle so you can see if the water is flowing. This should ease your worrys. George Scott 110C
