  • Grass Lake Divisionals - must read

No testing is allowed Friday at Grass Lake regardless of where you launch from, explanation below.

The following was one of the questions on the referee test. The answer is in bold.

    5. You are the chief referee for a race on a Saturday and a Sunday when do you take authority?

Authority/responsibility – from 12 Midnight of the day before set-up to 12 Midnight of the day after racing ends (for example: for a Saturday/Sunday race this would be 12:01 AM Friday morning to 11:59 PM Monday night).

MHRA is responsible for race boats on Grass Lake from Midnight Thursday to Midnight Monday. This goes for any race boat on Grass Lake, whether it is launched from the pits or from a private residence (Brinkmans). From an insurance standpoint MHRA/APBA has liability without coverage on Friday/Monday. Therefore, there is absolutely no testing on Grass Lake on Friday regardless of where you launch from. Anyone testing Friday will be subject to penalty, yellow/red card, and potentially forfeit racing for the weekend. Racer School is the only thing that will take place, because we will have an ambulance and rescue on the water, per APBA rules.

I understand the confusion and frustration, but we HAVE to follow the APBA insurance rules.

Please be respectful and don’t test our enforcement. MHRA is only doing its best to run a safe event and not cause insurance issues.

Why didn't you get the ambulance for the whole day Friday so everyone who traveled in from afar could have had a shoot to test? This race site deserves the opportunity to have testing to go along with the racer school . Just wondered!!!!

We pay over $100.00 dollars an hour for an ambulance at Grass Lake. Additionally, we have to have the full complement of rescue on the water. We are already taxing our volunteers hard enough with Racer School and putting on the race.

Thanks for getting on top of this Dean, risk management and insurance are huge for APBA. All it would take is one mishap on Friday to jeopardize the sport for all of us.

Now we must have a class "A" ambulance which adds another $50/hr for us. Not in the rule book. But is part of the Referee/risk managers test.
