  • Prop nut and other hardware

Just pick up a small Hydro for my grandson. It has 15 Johnson on it with a non shiftable gear case. I borrowed a propeller but I need the prop nut, washer and drive pin/shear pin. to try the boat. Anyone here know where they sell hardware like that? Also the use boat did not have a bracket on the transom to adjust the in and out on the motor so info on that would also help me get started? The prop I have also does not have any markings on it like I am use too so how do you make any determination after you try it? Taller or smaller?

First there probably will be posters chiming in to supply just what you need.

But some info would be helpful. Are we talking a racing lower unit with a 9/16" diameter prop shaft? Not sure about the Johnson thread size. If it is like the Merc quicki gear case the nut is a 1/2" x 13 NC (national coarse) thread and the lock washer for 9/16" shaft size. I use the stainless 1/2"x13 Nyloc nut without the lock washer on my 25ss and Yamato , never had one loosen up just change nut when it feels like it needs it. My Merc and Yamato uses a 1/8" dia shear pin cut to fit the boss diameter of the prop the Johnson probably uses the same diameter pin. You can use quality steel rod for the pin available at hardware (no stainless). No need to excessively tighten the nut.

With race boats you need a speed indicator (gps or water pick up will work for relative differences) and a tachometer.
At first you will need to try different heights for the engine. Start with the prop shaft level with the bottom and set the engine on the transom without any rev sticks, run and record speed and rpm and note the attitude of the boat, are the sponsons off the water at speed? Raise engine say 1/8" and adjust the prop shaft to be level and run again, record speed and rpm and boat attitude. Keep on playing till the prop doesn't work (speed loss) at the higher setting and back off a shim. Water conditions, wind, etc all play a part on the results, different days give different results. You will need at least 2 props to compare. Keep good notes.

Is the engine in top shape with compression, carb, tming, etc?

Is the prop 3 blade or other?

For the engine angle adjustment is there at least a steel shaft that fits in several holes? If not a kickout bracket is needed.

Do you have a good race type life jacket and helmet?

Does the engine have a safety shut off button with lanyard attached to the driver in case driver ejected?

Post pics of the boat, engine and prop and the transom and clamp area of the engine to see what you have.

Be safe, have a chase boat available.

You can get a drive pin, 307949, at any Johnson, Evinrude dealer. The threads are fine threads on the J&E's racing gearcase.
