  • Face Lift for Nationals

We I have decided to do some refinements for the APBA nationals to my project boat.. We hope to test in one month on the weekend of the 26-27 of April.. I was finally able to get the boat out of the trailer after all the snow.. I fit a extra air and water deflector piece to the rear cowl.. Stripped the hardware and started sanding.. It has been a few years but I plan to spray paint with the new Dupli Color in blue and yellow.. The paint needs no hardener or reducer, just strain and spray.. For a primer, two colors and clear it was $100 plus free shipping from Summit Racing.. I will post pictures after some more site bugs are worked out

This shows how easy the new system is to use.. The hardest part of the process is the prep work done before painting

Mike you are correct about that. The quality of your finish is directly related to the amount of effort put into the prep. I've had my eye on this paint system ever since it came out but have not had the opportunity to try it. Please keep us updated on the progress and let us know how you like using this system.

I will keep everyone updated.. I am waiting for the big brown truck.. I will say I am anxious to try this stuff.. I have painted with the expensive stuff and all the hardeners, reducers and long drying times so I hope this works well.. It is nice not having a big expense.. The only down side is the small amount of color options but it looks like they have a nice blue and yellow..

Mike, Sean and I used it to paint his MRC boat; I've even used it to paint an old Honda CRX. We turned my garage into a paint booth for a weekend and his boat came out really nice! Maybe Sean can post some pictures. I will give one piece of advice....make sure you have a good layer of primer. I painted my boat with two coats of primer, three coats of the lighter blue, and when I laid down my two coats of clear I could see through the paint and primer to the sanded old surface. I don't know if it was something I did which is a high probability or what caused it, just figured I'd give you a heads up.

Thanks Jon. Sean has been keeping me up to date also and he said to make sure primer was heavy enough.. Sounds like you are using the same color blue

How much does this system actually cost to paint a boat ? I admit, i am interested. I spend around $200 per boat for Primer/Paint/Clear if I am only doing one color, and just the nose piece and some accents. This is with the automotive style paint from the body shop. If I use more than a quart of paint or two colors it adds up real quick. I really like how fast that stuff appears to dry. Could shave some time off the process for sure.

So far Dave I have $103 invested in two colors, primer, and clear.. The nice thing is this stuff does not need hardener or reducer.. Now the question is will I need more for a 12 foot boat..

Mike, when I painted my SEH (12'8") I used 1 quart each of primer, red, white and had a little bit of the colors left over after two coats. I used all of the primer in two coats, sanding between each coat, with 320 and sanding with 320 prior to paint. This was using automotive style paint with the reducers and gloss hardener, no clear coat. Not sure how this relates to the Dupli Color but a couple of quarts of each should be enough.

Mike, when I painted my SEH (12"8") I used 1qt each of primer, red, white and still had some red and white left over after two coats. The colors were about equal parts on the boat. Not sure how this translates to the Duplicolor but a couple of qts of each color and primer should cover your boat.

That is a good price, and if it looks nice, I am going to go that route. Will have to be the right purple though.... my local body shop has the mix in their database. Any ideas how it weighs compared to normal mix paint (automotive) ?

Since I have used both types of paint I will let you know how it weighs out.. I will say some of these colors are metallic so I would guess they will be a little heavier

Just finished the sanding.. Waiting for some more of my favorite body filler to finish cowl and am now starting to mask off for primer. Seams like the sanding never ends

II used thre Duplicolor red on Jacks lake boat.- 14 ft Jaguar tunnel cat-- I used 2 qts of primer over a 220 base sanding and 320 between coats . 2 quarts of color gave 3 coats of red. sanded with 600 wet and clear coated wih a 1/2 gal of clear from E bay ( a place in NJ ). came out great has been on for 3 seasons with no problems.

Since the Dupicolor system is a lacquer it dries very hard and brittle with age based on my experience painting many cars with lacquer. Agreed lacquer is a great finish, easy to apply and can be sanded and buffed to a mirror finish and it is cost effective. Any concerns with some cracking on a wood boat that expands and contracts? I guess time will tell. Success with the painting and looking forward to the rest of your story.

Dark Blue and Gold. The gold color is a bit cheesy out in the sun, but you don't have much of a selection of colors.

would additional coats make the gold less "cheesy"? I love how shiny it is and how the light plays off of the boat.

Looks great Sean.. I like the way the light comes thru.. I am sure that was planned.. I will say the draw back is the lack of colors but if you were good with your primary colors you could make any color you wanted
