    Hey Matt!

Just wondering... could you not use fiberglass? I know carbon is the cool looking and all conquoring material but for our purposes isn't fiberglass strong enough for much of the boat?

there is more to it than the cost of material.

          Dave Rawson

Great to see a post concerning Dave Rawson. I have known Dave for most of my 61 years. I got my start in racing through Dave's efforts back in the 50's. I used to pit for him whenever I was lucky enough to get an invitation to go with him. He worked for my dad then and continued to do so off and on for many years. My first ride in a raceboat was in Dave's KG powered ASH on the R 84 canal in Ft Lauderdale where I grew up. My first raceboat was a Rawson ASH. I have nothing but admiration for him as a racer and as a person. He is also one good boat builder. I'll be looking him up again this winter when I get back to Ft Lauderdale.

I remember when the price of crude skyrocketed in the 1970's ... the cost of resin went up so much that all the makers reformulated and some of the new formulas didn't really work ... fiberglass boats started delaminating right and left until the best new stuff finally settled into the market ... everything is going to cost at least a little more.

Hang in there Matt, your boats are the good stuff

              Andy

I did'nt choose carbon fiber to build boats for looks. I have changed alot of my ways for building the boats since I started, none of them were to reduce the cost. The reason I make changes is to improve the product, even if it means a price increase. I wont substitute with a lesser material to cut costs.

AXSH Hemp just about done except for the finish , weight with the first coat of West is 66 pounds and still have some wood to trim around the deck/sponson area, sides are Carbon fiber /Kevlar mix, hardest stuff I ever worked with the Kevlar just dont want to cut even when finshed the saw blade smkoes when cutting the stuff. Only nuce part is it comes in colors which this is dark blue in color. Doug to answer your question about how long it took dont really know as I didnt keep track of time It did take longer then it usually does when I build a boat just for the fact of trying to build it as light as possible. Each step you have to think about how much weight you can trim off without making the boat weak in that area. You just cant wack pounds off have to do it in stages taking oz's off.

                                Boat very pretty George!

As I said your boat looks sweet, Good Job pal. Also, as I told you, you got me thinking and I built an A-B runabout for something to do around xmas. Built it on a 70 year old, small table, in my small cellar. Here's a bad picture, don't want to let out any secrets. Disregard the sign in the backround, my cousin saw the sign and laughed a lot!
