Gents,
One of our sponsors at this years Mod Divisionals at Zanesville (23-24 July) is Tom Herbert. A few of you guys may know him. Tom was a B runabout racer from back in the 60's. He is a successful businessman now and owns Delta Marine in Columbus (still sells Mercury and Rinkers !!) . His success story is as much about him as it is about boat racing and what competition did to shape him as a young man. Tom has been a special friend to me for 45 years because he got me started in boat racing ......Gents, this was in 1960 ! Tom's last race as a competitor was in 1967......driving an "experimental" pointy-nosed "B" runabout at the Columbus Marathon. Shortly after he blew by me, I watched him flip violently on the straightaway on the first lap. He hung his boat and Mark 20H on the wall of his dealership and called it quits.
But, Tom still supports APBA racing and wants to see some Mercury Mk 20H's run at Zanesville. So.....On Sunday (only) we will have a "race-within-a-race" in the "A" Mod runabout class. Runabouts with Mercury Mark 20H's will compete against each other for $100 1st place, $50 2nd place, and $25 3rd place as well as for the A Mod overall. I plan to run my Mod Hot Rod on Saturday for the Divisionals and run my Mark 20 H on Sunday.....You guys have time to break out those old dusty Mercury relics in your trailer box and have some FUN ! Bring those Canadian "B's" ! This will be a "roll-up rendezvous". Thanks, Mike Marshall, Raceboat61-S, Race Director
