It's race time up here again, the Yukon 800 will start here in Fairbanks at 11AM Saturday. Racers will cover 400 miles nonstop (hopefully) arriving in the village of Galena in western Alaska later in the day. The speed record for the halfway point 400 miles is 5 hours 35 minutes.
Sunday morning at 6 the racers will have a mass start and race back to Fairbanks. If you are not familiar with our unique style of racing or the boats they are 24 feet long, carry three crew members including driver, and can use any stock engine up to 45.3 ci. About 45 gallons of gas is carried.
The engines of choice is usually the Yamaha 50 triple, the OMC 50 (45SS powerhead) and Tohatsu has been tried by a few also. They must remain stock with the exception of nosecones, and removal of rev limiters. The fastest boats are capable of about 78 mph max and weigh about 1500 pounds total with crew.
Along with boat, fuel, and crew rules require a rifle or shotgun and ammo, rations for 3, hatchet or axe, matches or lighter and a flare for everyone, first aid kit, sleeping bag, fire extinguisher, and of course helmets/life jackets.
Racing Alaska style! We are talking remote wilderness here, there are radio checkpoints along the route, and a couple planes are out there to help also.
Hope this is not off topic but boat racing is boat racing right? The web site is at www.yukon800.com with lots more tidbits.
Thanks!
