I stopped in a Hornberger's Bakery today, owned by Gene's neice. She told me Gene passed away just before Easter. For those of you who did not know Gene, he was a long term CSR driver in Region 3. Gene was best known for his station wagon full of pastries every weekend. Gene would race on Saturdays, drive home to Atlantic City, bake all night for his bakery store and return to the pits Sunday AM with pastries for everyone and race again on Sunday. I don't know how old Gene was but his little brother is 83. Gene's whole family are bakers. The last time we saw Gene was at Lock Haven in 2003. Everyone who knew Gene has fond memories of a fine man.
