  • Update: Driver Signal Lights !

I am still working on the lights and have received lots of inquires and offers
of ideas and for assistance to make them a reality. THANK YOU ALL!

Here is where they are at:
The test at Ocoee was not as successfull as I had hoped. The sun really
made the lights effectiveness less than my tests on shore. The reflection
of the sun off the water combined with the daylight conditions made the
green light virtually impossible to see. The clear light was good, the blue
light was ok and the Red light worked good too.

What I have done since is I have decided to remove the Green light, as
we leave the pits under the green flag, so we really are only looking to
find the white flag/light on the course, so that is one cost saving idea.

I have learned recently that to improve the visibility I need 24 Joules of
light to work well in daylight. I have been in touch with several light manf.
and found that the next design will be made with LED's.

I also learned that the lights were a hindrace on the turnboats since we use them to aid in rescue efforts and course repairs. I have decided to concentrate on a bouy design remotely operated from the judges stand and placed inside the entrance pins in each turn.

I have been working with the inboard category (Robin & Stuart Shane) and they have been giving me lots of help and ideas to improve the lights.
They have had some issues that the lights would potentially correct so I welcome their input and help.

Please bear with me, I am still working the bugs out to make this idea a
    successfull reality.
I plan to test again at Camden, the racecourse is different than Ocoee so I want to see the current lights in action again before abandoning that design.

I will keep you posted as improvements, and information become available.
    Thanks for your patience.

    Excellent Effort!

    Dennis,

I seen the "DLS" in Action @ Ocoee & felt you did an awesome job. I do really appreciate your passion for this project. When you feel it is ready to go I will be recommending BSOA (Badger State) to obtain a set. Keep up the hard work & keep us posted.

            Honestly

Honestly I could not see them all that well in Ocoee. When Hunter blew over I raced backed to the second turn and seen the flipped boat as I looked ahead, but never did see the Flags on Judges stand or the rescue boats. Judges stand well nuff said, to far back to do any good anyways.

I suggest bigger and rotating lights. I still think this idea is a very good one. It just needs to be worked out.

              Working on it

              Dave,
I hear ya buddy, I agree the lights in Ocoee were hard to see.
I posted earlier that I have learned alot since then, and have
found more powerfull lights. (unfortunatly at a higher cost)

I am working on colored LED's that are 10 times brighter.
As I was informed the beacons I used work on the priciple of
sending white light through colored lenses. This coupled with
the sunlight reduces the effectiveness of the colors,
now the LED's are already colored and the flash is on longer
than the beacons so the imprint on the eye is stronger. \

I will come up with a signal that will work it just may take a little
longer than I had hoped, but with any worthwhile project patience
              will overcome adversity.
Thank you for the vote of confidence in the idea, and I will keep everyone
              informed here.

                    led lights...

Try contacting a company that sells those arrow boards you see on the highway... You can get them in many colors and there bright as hell and the are made for optimum visibility in sun light conditions... were messing around with them for a digital clock... I "borrowed " one from work and it ran for 5 days on a garden tractor battery in the garage.... they use very little power... There 5 inch in dia. and they have a 5 inch deep bezzel and they can be flush mounted and the polarity does not matter... The traffic signals around here are starting to use them... Much brighter .....
