Originally posted by Jeff5PThere is a difference between stepping your stock motor over to mod and stepping up a mod motor into a different mod class. To step over from stock to mod, you need to check the list in the rule book and see what class your stock motor is legal in. Then you need to be registered as a mod driver and you are ready to race and receive points in the mod class.
To step up from one mod class to another is different. For example, a C Mod (either a Mercury or a Yamato) can step up to D Mod. To get national high points, there must already be 3 D Mods in the class, then you as a step up will get D points. In other words, you cannot be the third boat, but can be the 4th, 5th,. or 6th boat.
What Steve French was talking about is running combined classes. In Steve's case a lot of times, they will run 2 C's and 2 D's together and because there are not 3 legal boats of any one class, no one gets points. If there were 1 C and 3 D's then the D's get points and the C gets nothing because he did not request to step up to D. If he did request to step up, then because there are already 3 D's he would get D points.
I hope this helps clear things up for you. If not, give us a call and we can go over it again.

There are several questions that need to be answered because of this new rule..
1st - why is the max tuck such a bad thing for only the A's & FA's? Isn't the Hot Rod/ OMC gear case the best gear case we have? And if it is, then why would it be more dangerous for that gearcase to run with major tuck but it is fine for a Yamato, which is one of the worse tracking cases?
2nd - If this was truely a measure to plug a hole that some had found in the height rules, then why didn't the SORC, MORC & Safety Committee fix this hole for all classes by fixing the height rules by having the height measured from the heightest point along the prop shaft, front or back? That way if you wanted to run 2 inches of tuck you would have to be 2 inches deeper?
Instead this rule focuses on the "bad" setup of the rig not fixing the rule that the driver "squeaked" around in the first place, which was height.
This rule, although some might say it is a step in the right direction, presents more questions than it answers. Unless we are to beleive that the A & FA drivers are just that much more inexperienced than in other classes and they are the only ones needing protection.
Just my 2 cents.

Brian,
Dad and I were just talking about that yesterday. Maybe we need to relook at the issue, and consider making this rule all across the board. It was only done in A because that is were people are running this setup.
I do however think it is possible that this setup would not work in other classes. Dad disagrees, but I tend to think that this is a benefit in A because it is a low hp, low speed class. Now of course this i just theory, but it seems to me that if this were tried to the extremity that it was in A, you would see more loss of control, and less increase in speed.Ryan Runne

Ryan,
I think that what is good for one should be good for all. And the rule should not be about a set up but what is truely at the heart of the matter, "squeaking" around a height rule.
I have seen other classes running 3/4 - 1 inch tuck last year and I wasn't looking that hard. You can't out toothpaste back in the tube and you can't limit racers from coping what works. If it works in one class, it will get tried in others, that's just a fact.
Kinda interesting that instead of fixing the true problem (perople getting around the height rule), we went after the set up of a few racers instead. Yes, it might have been unsafe but many things are unsafe and don't get that much attention.
Just an observation.

Oh Well...
I quess Uncle Sam (Hemp) is gonna have to build Johnny Palmquist a new boat & continue to be the class of the field! It is unfortunate the MOD catagory (FAH) will be effected by the "TUCK UNDER" rule. Oh Well back to the drawing board!17W

But Brian ... isn't that exactly what the APBA BOD is doing ... getting after the safety issue that the height rule was initially intended to address? The "tuckees" were trying to get around a safety rule (height rule) and the BOD found a way to deal with the scofflaws.Untethered from reality!

2nd - If the BOD wanted to correct the safety issue, why just in A & FA? And also why not make it that you have to drop to tuck by measuring the height off either the front or rear of the gearcase, whichever is higher. Because right now everyone that runs tuck is getting around the height rule. The "tuckees" just took more advantage than the rest of us. The BOD/ SORC/MORC should have corrected the safety issue and pluged the hole in the height rule. The current rule passed is like putting a bandaid on the Titanic. Looks like you are doing something from the outside but doesn't get the job done.

Darren,
Nope, won't be at Ocoee. Boat still in peices. Have soem work to do before I'm ready.
Sorry for the "Rain" comment. Hopefully you guys will dry up some. On the bright side, can't complain about finding water, you could probably race in somebodies backyard.
I am not the expert on the step up but I know someone who is. Email my Dad or Mom and they can explain much better, if it is still fuzzy. mjracing@alltel.net.

Sorry for the commercial but sometimes you have to pay the bills (and I need to keep my spot on the trailer )
Good Luck down in Fla!!Brian 10s
