what are the specific guidlines for "step ups" in Mod Racing? Does the motor/boat in question have to meet the cubic inch specs of the class it is stepping up to or can any motor/boat step up to a larger class? What I am trying to say, is, can a CSH step up to FEH? I know a CSH can step up to CMH, but I was wondering how far you could go? The rule book does not specify the exacts....that I can find anyways?

Daren,
Last I knew, the Nationals are the only limited step-up races?
May also have to ask at drivers meeting. Sometimes in a point race they don't want slower rigs in the way.
I stepped from 25Mod to FEH at Crystal Lake to try a wheel from Craig (I think you have it now>>> 7 5/16x14 anodized finish?).
Stayed way back at start. Glad I stayed back, It was the run Ken Rosado blew over in.

LEGAL MOTOR=LEGAL POINTS.
Had to do alot of stepping-up/being combined last year or go home (usually after a ten hour drive (one way) at 8 miles per gallon)!!!
For me, It's the ONLY way I can test!...They don't seem to mind taking my entry fees either......BUT....I always try to stay out of the way also!
Better get on the phone and start calling your buddies ahead of time cause more and more races are trying to say---"less than 5--bye bye".
I agree with less than 3 no points but you want to see rigs come up for sale..stop combining
Some of the best racing/most fun I had/and best shows for spectaters, last year was in combined classes.
Warren,pa. sat. (4)B's (including my 25 OMC) and (1)C MOD hydros were combined. It was rough with unusual wind out of the south. My Arltralite works best in the rough and no pipe slider to work---just hang on and WIN!!! (started 3rd)
Loch Haven, pa. the (2) 125pros would of gone without pulling a rope if not combined with 25MOD. turned out to be one of the best shows of the weekend!
Stop combining? ---go ahead "MAKE MY DAY", my fishing licence is a whole lot cheeper than my race licence!!
I wonder what would happen if 13 rigs showed up for every class......
OK LETS SEE WHERE THIS "BUCKET OF FISH/CAN OF DEAD WORMS/CAN OF WOOP A$$/ROTT'N EGGS/ETC,ETC," ----GOES

Daren,
Would like to try that wheel again.
Had Mike Schmitt (PRO-driver) rework my gearfoot(ad a chizel / hatchet nose/fill cressent and flatten/narrow sides to 2.030) to take lift out. That wheel was a little steep at 3/4" from bottom, but hope to now get to 1/4" or less and that wheel may work. Also going to try a 14:19 hot-rod foot and need bigger wheels for that.
What gear foot parts do you need? Send me phone number

There is no "step up" in the mod rule book.
on page 8 of the 2005 Rule book paragraph 7b states: "step ups" are allowed in MO, thre must be three legal entries, not including "step ups", in a MO class in order for high points to be given.
so, my question is what defines a "step up"???? Also, to my understanding that is there are 3 legal entries, excluding the "step ups", the "step ups" would also be awarded points?
John Read or Mark Wheeler can you explain this to me please?Daren

Tom Rice has run C-MOD with his C-Stock rig for years and with consistant finishes, has placed well in National points.100N STEVE FRENCH > Nobody can hang with my STUFF!! >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tna3B5zqHdk

Has to be a legal motor for the class.
Your "step-ups" get to race but only the legal motors get points.
If it is a combined class with three legal motors say (3) B's and (3) C's, you get points for your class only.
Where it really gets screwed up is if your motor is legal in both. You have to decide where you want your points.
My 25 OMC is legal motor in both 25MOD and B. I run for points in both. Several times 25MOD and B were combined with (3) legal motors of each but the "powers that be" said "less than 5 BYE,BYE or combine". Then you have to decide where you want your points to go. ALSO if your the third boat, the other guys loose out if you designate your points to the other combined class with (3) legal motors. Say I take points in B, that leaves (2) 25mods and (4) B's. Kinda tuff on the other 25MOD guys.
Then you have to find a A-mod Merc or B canadian who's willing to run as the other (3rd) 25MOD. Happened at Crystal lake and Loch Haven 2004 and Williams Port 2003.
Same can happen if they combine A-MOD and 25MOD. I also run a A-mod merc.
That's why now I bring (3) legal 25MOD rigs to a race.----Someone is usually willing to go for a ride if need. ----Nate Forshey ran one of my rigs 2003 and often beat me!!!!
Look for Joel Weigel in my rig this year!!! Going to give my knee a break on second day.

Originally posted by samNow I see what you are asking Daren. I mistakenly thought you were asking if there was a step up exception in Mod like there is in PRO where a deflector can step up one motor size as a handicap. There is no simular rule in mod ..... but the rules you are referring to are to fillout heats with slim entries ..... like I said eariler - completely up to the local race comittee .... there is no fixed rule.
Steve is right: A local race comittee can allow CMR's and or DMR's to step up to FER if they wish, but the FER's only get points for the race if there are 3 or more legal FER's. It is as if the stepped up boats are invisable to APBA HQ ... they score no points. The local race comittee can allow FAR's to run in the FER heat if the race comittee wishes; there is no fixed rule and it kinda doesn't matter because the step ups recieve no points.... but they do get seat time
OK, I was called with the specifics I was asking here. As long as the motor/boat that is stepping up in the mod class meets the cubic inch requirments of the class being stepped up to and is a legal motor in another class (such as a Yamato 102/302 powered CSR stepping up to a CMR), it will score points. So, a CMR (Merc C powered) will receive points, when stepping up to DMR, since DMR has a cubic inch requirement of 30-44CI and a 30H Merc is 30CI. A Yamato powered CMR would not receive points.
thanks to Dale Bishop for informing me of the specifics. It was in writing in the rule book, just not clear enough to me...Daren
