They already race Yamatos on tunnel hulls in Australia. I can't find the website today, but I can dig up some photos and maybe video. I think AOF experimented with Yamatos on tunnel hulls back in the 1970's, too.
We could get rid of the capsules in 500 cc hydros?
Just a thought...
Dave
It was guys like you that made the capsule class not have a good following when the change was made, to many cry babies that wouldnt CONFORM and here it is again, lets just get rid of the capsules, maybe if you would have stepped up to the plate and CONFORMED before we wouldnt be in this mess, if you want to run UNSAFLEY then go the west coast where they still run without regards to the rules, APBA will never let 500 and up run without capsules, so just go back and play with your thoughts but make sure you know what you are thinking about, before you pull the starter rope

Please explain your comments "run UNSAFELY then go to the WEST COAST" where they run without regards to the rules.

Unfortunately you are incorrect Mr m174, we DID step up to the plate and BOUGHT a capsule boat, 2 700 cc engines and continued to run 500 also. What has made the capsules not have a good following is that they are more expensive, heavier (you need more help), and not nearly as much fun to drive as a laydown boat. Please define "running UNSAFELY". Maybe they (APBA) won't allow non-capsule boats over 500cc, in that case we'll continue to see these classes remain stagnent...

I always thought growing up would be cool, I was wrong!
The other day GG laughed at me because I take more pills a day than she does....
In alot of area's of the country 45's(which were legal) used to run with the 1100's. Then one year a 45 took 1100H national high point. Well the next year you had the sponson rule! and lost entries that kept the class with high enough numbers that is was still viable. Were is it now? 5-7 capsul boats at Nationals all switching engines between classes so that 5/7/1100 all can run.

Yeah, you unsafe non-conformist cry babies, why don't you go to the West Coast where you belong, then capsule boat racing will be saved.
Here, here, for the safe, conformist babies that don't cry on the East Coast...now that is a program that I can really get charged up about.

Eric, is this the kind of thing you had in mind when starting this thread?
I think has worked perfectly.
Let's not forget the Premier Series that was supposed to create races for the Capsule boats and pay all of us enough show money that we would all get a return on our investments. Remember that one from DICK HAAS!
I think that was the beginning of the end for the Capsules. I had one, you had one and several others were thinking of buying one because we were all told the stories of how great "DICK" was at promoting and that there was no way we could loose, but we did in the end. Then after the premier series failed, someone turned the capsule thing into a safety thing and then who knows what happened next.
Anyway, I sure enjoyed driving mine, especially the Radios!
Ah yes... fond memories of old Dick, and the parade in Zanesville.
I'm still embarassed I had anything to do with him. You live, you learn.
There are people trying to promote the capsule classes and I wish them all the best, I personally don't enjoy racing the capsules but we have transfered the boat and motors, for what they are worth, to an un-named racer who is going to try and compete in the coming year. The rules this year for 500 sprint are looking good, Lemans start, short course, bring your boat, race.
Man we did have some fun.

We don't need any cry babies out here on the west coast either. Capsules have hurt the number of participating drivers, but they have saved lives. We could argue about this forever, and No I don't own a capsule. I would prefer to run open cockpit.
There are several capsules out this way, except nobody will run them unless they load em up and head for depue. And yes, we still run 500cc open cockpits in AOF out this way. Does that make the west coast unsafe?
btw, speaking of unsafe.....I like your avatar

Yea,
something like this, I was getting tired of reading about A stock setups and how fast they go.
Marc, good point about "Dick Haas" Never trust a promoter. Nice quip about the radios too. Hooters/Pugh Boat Works has several sets.
The idea was just do away with the 60% rule and see what happens, can it get worse? Opening up the class to different boat designs will not make racers rush out and buy a tunnel when they gave up on their capsule hydro, but it might make it more open. Of course then the capsule hydro racers will leave
My uneducated guess is that sitting in a noncapsule tunnel is a bad idea. Tunnels dont bounce off each other when they collide, they crash hard. Also Joe S. hydros and tunnels cross wakes atleast once in a turn since the hydro slides. Dont say "my hydro turns like its on rails" it dont compared to a tunnel. The end result is the hydro driver gets run over by the tunnel driver aftre he drifts out. Or, the hydro driver gets run over after he sneeks on the inside entering a corner.

Joe, the reason was simply that the hydro's were out wide and then turned in while the tunnels were hugging the buoys. This creates a collision course and when racing nobody wants to give way........
The hydro would try to get to the turn first to hose down the cat that would be approaching the turn buoy.....different approaches to the same turn buoy = crunch!!
