Condolence to all the family and friends this is the very ugly side of all forms of motor racing. Most families and drivers know the risk.

From the description, it sounds as though there was a steering system malfunction. Not the first time that has happened. Sometimes motors have got loose from transoms as well.

In my second race as a novice in 1965, Stu Lowe, the inspector that day, came down the beach, looked over my boat, and told me in scathing terms (which were not out of order at all) that he didn't like the throttle lash-up I had. Possibly closer pre-race inspection by a sharp-eyed man like Stu, or just having your neighbor in the pits give your rig a looking-over, could catch a few oversights and goofs before they hurt anybody.
