To be exact the bottom resembles a flyer besigned by Lee Furnel and modified by Tom Cronk. The top was designed by Tom Cronk. Both Tom and Lee both built there first boats with Pat Davids. Tom Did change that bottom design a little. How many races did the boat they built for you win? Me personally, I dont care what you build. But useing a man's design (exactly) against his will is not right. It's the same as stealing. It's not a artralight, and it's certainly not a Hootencraft, it's a tecraft that means you found him, he didn't find you. And look what he got, his design stolen and a guy he helped trying his hardest to put him out of buisness. Do the rest of the guy's who steped up to the pump and bought the best know the designs have been stolen??

              stolen

For the record I don't think this is going to help but ,I really don't want any beef with you .If you remember I asked you if you were going to build any carbon fiber boats over a year ago and you said no I gave you first shot at it . I needed a lighter boat that is why I got the boat from you last year and I also told you I was thinking of having matt help me with a boat like my old one I didn't hear you jumpimg up and down then. I understand ( exactly ) where the design came from and the people who had input on building the original boat in 1992 ( 13 years ago ) . when i got the boat back ( 2 years ago ) it was a mess and the guy who built it would not help me fix it .I took the boat two diffrent times to two diffrent builers to add updates to the boat from other peoples ideals ( pads from gary pugh ) ect . As far as an exact copy you know as well as i do that can't happen , I did not send the boat to matt and matt never measured the boat , and if you look at the new design of the tec craft north and the boat matt built it will not be the same . As far as winning races i quess i have a lot of people to think but tec craft is not in that list. He has never helped me as a matter of fact he has went out of his way and worked very hard to srew me , I have bought and paid for hardware from him .and as far as stealing goes i think you are going a little to far , You have not seen the boat , the boat has not been tested , I hope you get a better start at ocoee besause you have jumped the gun here

                What the heck ???

Based on what I read here, it is indicating that people can actually make money building boats ? I agree you can make a little, but not a living. Even Mat has other projects to keep afloat. I will not believe anyone who tells me they can make a comfy living building boats, no other job, and still race and still have fun. If you were to be paid for the time it took to build a boat they would cost near $5000.00 - $10,000 for a wood one. Who is gonna pay that ? Nobody. So given that has anyone in kneeldown boats ever had a design trademarked or applied for a patten ?

If you want the sport to grow, you need to let your ideas be public.

One question, would you like the best racing boats out there competing against you ? If so, then you can't ***** about boats being copied.

I can say from experience that most builders are VERY happy to share measurments, ideas, designs, etc. I recently emailed some builders for some measurments on a boat. Each and every one gave me exactly what I needed. I built the boat based on what I found out. The winningest boat in the class is the one I relyed on the most. He was a major contributor to his competition.... oh did I say competition ?? That is racing, isn't it ?

you are right dave. matt is trying his best to do what he does for a living but is keeping his prices way lower than he would like to make them affordable for everyone to use.
the only person i know of that made a somewhat comfortable living off of building boats was jamie auld, and he had some help starting up his business.
but without boat builders sharing ideas there would only be one boat builder making pickle fork boats these days, and it's very rare to see a conventional style boat racing these days. i personally have a boat just recieving some trimming and reinforcing and i have ideas from many boats in it with the permission of the designer. matt arlt also mentioned the idea of me building a wooden version of his boats, just to see how it would preform.
so i believe boat builders have to stick together and share some ideas in order for the sport to elolve.
                  just my 2 canadian cents,

Please dont take my passion for this topic out of context, I did not mean to launch any kind of personal assault on anyone. I am not running to anyone's resque, or speculating on who's right and who's wrong. I hope your new ride is fast, and safe and better than that I hope you use it in good health. Truth be known my opinion is so insignificant it's unbelivable. I am a huge fan of a one off race boat especially one that uses state of the art tecnology. The only point I was trying to make was that it doesn't have to come at the expense of another builder or racer. I't been my experience that most guy's are willing to share what they have learned after spending countless hours away from other intrests to find what works. This whole thing was cast in a different light when I first heard of it, the inpression I was under is that a pirate mold was made for the spacific purpose of scarfing and mass producing someone elts's design, which is unethical. Prime example, Bud Parker, Bayer, Hustler, Quincy, 4 different megaphone makers evreyone did there own homework and had there own design. How many guys want to be patenting designs, and hiding there boats in order to protect themselves against the other boat racers? It should be his decision to give or keep his info out of respect if nothing elts. It is entirely possible that I will persue an Arltralight boat in the future but if and when I do I would like Matt's design because win loose or draw it's his. I apologize if I ruffeled any feathers over something that was none of my buisness.

Some may think regs are order? Self thinking ok templates for area of boat consyderd critacal as to safety, bottom, sides, deck and bow?
Color of paint could be option.

I have an older apba rule book, no mention of foreign motors?

very true dean, but you never know what may come along. that boats i have developed are preforming and once the boats get a capable driver in them, they might give some good runs at the nationals in upcoming years. the boat i am just finishing has 10"s of pickle for me, the rookie, but the rest will have a good 7".
the boat that i am thinking about building next would be for my dad. so maybe he can put on a good show after 20 years away from SO and about 6 from stock inboards. with some innovation from me and some good ideas from matt arlt, these STU Crafts might be popular in 5-10 years
and matt arlt is making some fast, good riding rigs.
but i'm not taking away from you and your designs at all. your resume speaks for itself.
well good luck to you dean, and everyone else for that matter in the upcoming season,
