      OMC vs Merc

I am a new ASH driver with an OMC and I am not speaking from direct experience, but only what my fellow racers told me when I asked that exact question.

What I have been told is that the OMC with either a J or AX restrictor simply won't compete with the Merc. The Merc has more displacement and accelerates faster than the OMC.

It seems the J and AX guys that want to run up front use a Mercury.

use this omc A motor for mod. 200cch/200ccr will be growing since sidewinder is so much faster. mod will be growing big time in2014

            OMC's

Where we race in Canada, ASH is pretty much all OMC. AX is more of a Merc class. A good unrestricted OMC has a top end advantage over the Merc in ASH. OMC's can usually be bought for less money as well.

This is my limited understanding though. Anybody can correct me if I am wrong!

            Dave.

Kel0315, what part of the country are you located? I see alot of responces for ASH and I see you need it for J. Not sure about the west coast ( But a ton of J's out there ), Pavlick is in the midwest ( Heavy in the J Program ) and Gary Pond is on the East coast that has alot of OMC stuff. George Stillwell may be able to guild you in the right direction also. You should be able to find a motor at a good price.
Someone should be able to help you find what you need.

WW Max,. wrong is too strong

WWM, very few Merc's running J/AX/A in TORC/CDA; from a budget and competitive standpoint in ASH, I'd recommend OMC. Dixon, Able & France have run competitive OMC's at APBA Nationals finishing high. If you are also getting another OMC for Jr to run JSH/AX, you'll have 2 same brand engines to swap parts if ever required, OR if only 1 engine, have him run JSH, and you run AX and ASH, changing restrictors/height/weight. When Jr & I started racing, he did JSH/AX & I did ASH, until we each moved up, he's kicking my a$$ everywhere.
IF you were only to run AXSH, higher budget & compete at APBA Nat's, then Merc makes sense. For resale in CDA, I think you will have larger market for OMC than Merc. Also from a servicing standpoint the best OMC wrench in CDA is in Bowmanville, just keep pouring the rum. Few Merc's w(r)enches here.
With Dixon/Webster testing Sidewinder, you might eventually upgrade OMC for a 15/20 SW to run ASH/20SSH, OR Y302 to run 20SSH/OSY.
There are great OMC engines in US, Price/Pond/etc...ask whether OMC has been bored over, who did work, how many hours ago, when was case rebuilt, etc...

                  Thanks Hydroid!

                  Thanks for sharing Eric!

I didn't realize you ran an A hydro! It makes a lot of sense to have two OMC's vs one of each brand for sure. You have confirmed that for me in your post. I think we will see how it goes with one OMC for now. We have quite a bit of work ahead getting the trailer, boats and new equipment setup.

Plus Evan is a little nervous of the race motor so far... He likes the 9.9 though!

                  We will be in touch!

Dave, order JSH & AXSH restrictor plate from APBA at ~$15-20 each + shipping, install for Evan for the lake to acclimarize. The J plate reduces speed to high 30's, and racing spec requires engine deeper than ASH to slow it down. He should practice planing, which requires finesse to get out of the hole. TORC has JSH props, you could borrow one to have him get comfortable,...Ice should be out late April, 90-100 days away

                      J hydro

That makes sense Erik. It just so happens the J props are located straight across the lake from my cottage! I didn't realize the J speeds were that much slower. It seems the Sorensen boat planes pretty easy, so hopefully it works out. We are planning to be there at Waterford as well for the school on Friday.

                      Thanks,
                      Dave.

Glad he's doing TORC racer school; all the more relevant he practice w restrictor & jprop before, avoid 'performance anxiety'...maybe that only comes at my age. Wow, this will be great summer for E-man.
