Just wanted to give everybody a heads up as to what is going on with class. Looks like all of the sealed motors that TJ has in stock have been spoken for. He might have one left....waiting on a check from what I understand. If we (the 302SSH committee) gets approval from the SORC we will be importing at least 8 more. Not sure of the exact timeline, but if things happen as fast as they did last time we could have motors (302's) pretty fast. We will keep everybody posted on this. Looks like region 6 will have elim heats next year, and we now have at least 3 in region 10 as of today. Regions 12, 7, and 1 have all expressed serious interest in the class. Also, it is no secret that we have a proposal with the historical society to fund a number of race ready rigs for 2014....everybody keep your fingers crossed that this happens! I personally want to take this opportunity to thank everybody that has helped Jeff Brewster and myself with this project. Much more to come in the future!

I do not want to throw a wet rag over any of this because I think it is a great way to go. However, I heard a very strong rumor that the 302 is out of production and replaced by the 321. Looks like the same motor. Except Carb looks shorter. Some people know a heck of a lot more than I do on this subject and it has been real quiet. Too quiet!!! the 302 motor may be hard to come by in the near future. Heck they are now!! Need to wait until March to get one? Why? Yamato has made hundreds of 302's. What is up???bill b

Dave, I have a few stock 302s that I want to get sealed, or at least one, if I send them to Ricky, 1) is that allowed 2) what is the approximate cost for the seal/prop?

302 engines
Hey John. Hope things are ok with the little one. Ya, you can send a current 302 to Ricky or TJ etc and get it checked out for factory specs and have it sealed. I think it's somewhere in the 500 buck range to have that done...they have to check the crank etc. From what I understand it is a fair amount of work. But, it is legal to have it done. I have heard that you have a few 302's laying around...would be cool to have them in the class. Like I mentioned, we have 3 in region ten right now. Oh ya....do the motors you own have the factory foot or the shaved foot? Just curious. Dave

302SS Hydro
Ric found a Stadium Raced powerhead and gear case for the motor he is doing for me...... I found a Stadium Raced tower and pipe.
Looking forward to the Stock / Mod Nationals this summer in Moses Lake.
I will race it this year in Region 10 in the "C Novice" class.

The problem with sealing a motor currently running is the whole motor must be disassembled, crank disassembled, and all parts measures to be sure that they have not been tampered with. If a ball hone has been used at any time you would need new sleeves or a new block. If the bores have been opened up again new sleeves or block. Every dimension on the motor would have to be checked. The pipe, tower, water inlet and outlet would have to be inspected.....I think the cost would be $600-$800 plus parts.

Flip side
On the flip side...we have 300 stock members right now....we can't mess around to much with logistics... If there is a huge demand from people that want to run class and we can't get motors in quanity to satisfy that demand we will have to look at other ways to keep things moving forward. That is why we have a very talented group of people (302 committee) looking at things. Dave

Silly question?
Why mandate that the motor has to be sealed? Why not just inspect the motor like any other class? Wouldn't that make this "novice/entry level" class less expensive? It seems like from what I read, Yamato owners want racing to be as inexpensive as possible.
On the flip side, if this "stock sealed motor" concept is working so well, why not expand it to other classes?

Question
Not a silly question at all Kev. I based the class on other spec classes, such as go-karts, Formula Ford, etc etc. They used a sealed motor to keep things on a level playing field...keeping the possibility of tampering with the motor internally to a minimum. If for whatever reason we were not able to obtain "new" 302 motors from Japan we would have to look at using existing C motors....they would either have to be torn down and inspected (which can be done now) or we would have to use some form of a claiming rule. At this point in time we are able to get motors......Dave

Great Idea!

Not a horrible idea at all. If you used this type of system you could impose a "serious penalty" that would deter cheating or on the flip side you would be encouraging a pre-inspection.
