  • Don't let Region 6 kill Sidewinder

There is a petition circulating by Mike Pavlick and Don Allen trying to kill the Sidewinder in the 20SSH class.

Don't buy into this protectionist movement. There is no data, there is no reason and there is a parity committee responsible to oversee this class. The motor has been legal for sometime now, voted in by the same people. It was implemented and has not created any issues.

Why not look at classes that should not be national classes 25ssh or DSR
They are only raced in region 6, that is why. APBA is more than region 6.

        Region 7 Region 6

Why oppose it now? Why no movement against the restricted 302? That has won more races. A national Championship and set a record with more cubic inches.

            It's true.

There is a petition by Don and I (Region 7) to let the drivers vote on whether the Sidewinder should be in the 20ssH class.

There are plenty of Y80 motors available for $1200 or less and Y302s for $2500 or less. Both are extremely competitive and have pretty good parity on most race courses. Case in point, Donny was going to race a Y80 at Nationals...and I chose to run a Y302.

Based on what is happening to the A class in our area (it is dead) we would like to avoid the same thing happening to the 20ssH class.

So, I guess you are right Scott...we are "protectionist". We are trying to protect one of the largest classes in Stock and helping to bring back some stability.

We have nothing against the Sidewinders, and wish them nothing but great success in ASH, ASR, BSH, BSR, 25ssR. We just feel that with having the closely matched Yamatos in the class, and not trying to achieve "parity" with another motor manufacturer, we are all much better off.

We let the SORC know our intentions. The petition is for current 20ssH drivers to be allowed to vote on whether the Sidewinder 20 stays in 20ssH.

Since this is a member run organization, we feel the members should have a say in how their class is run.

Thanks for posting this. The more folks that see it, the more likely the true voice of the racers of 20ssH will be heard.

You are correct. That is why we are asking that all 20ssH drivers throughout the entire country be allowed to vote on this issue.

Racing on water is over....welcome to boat racing on land

People in positions of power circulate a petition. Sometimes the petition is created because they already did a deal. Example: if you vote for this....we will vote for that. Sometimes a petition is created to test the prevailing opinion of the affected people. Other times a representative will send out a petition to better understand exactly what it is the people he or she represents think about a certain issue. You have to decide which of the three reasons apply here and if there is a fourth I would like to hear it.

Does not matter that a petition has no validity at the national meeting. The petition is simply used as a tool in the pre-negotiation process. It is all about the pre-negotiation. Most issues are settled well before the actual National Meeting. The National Meeting just settles the details and takes a vote on foregone conclusions.

Welcome to the process if this is all new to you.

The point of the petition is that it builds consensus and establishes a validity to whatever the issue of the moment is. Also, it can be used as a negotiation tool.

                Welcome to National Meeting politics.

                  There is no power here

Huh?? I have no power....I'm just trying to protect one of Stocks best classes.

This is not about the National meeting. The petition allows the actual DRIVERS in the class to vote.

                  Mike

PS. Our racing for the season isn't over, so it has nothing to do with us being bored after the race season.

Bill, all we are doing is following the rules of our by laws. The drivers of the class will decide the outcome.

If the Sidewinder does not belong in 20SSH I want to see hard data on why not. I do not want to see a petition by people that bought a Y-80 in 1974 for under 500 and got a special one.

                        Brad,
I'm not on the SORC, and will not negotiate on this. I believe the drivers should vote.

In the future, if you would like to discuss your version of what you think happens at the National Meeting, feel free to start your own thread.

                          Hi Don,

This is Brad, Bills son. Dad does not use computers much. We have met on multiple occasions.

My father does not share my views that I know of and I certainly don't consult with him to produce one voice.

Not required to attend the National Meeting

Great question. Petitions will be mailed to you. The intent is to ensure all 20ssH drivers can vote, not just those able to attend the national meeting. You will be allowed to vote via your ballot sent out by APBA. Simply vote your choice and mail the ballot back to APBA.
