  • No luck with Boysen reeds!!

Wanted to warn everone thinking of using Double Peddal Boyasen reeds not to use them in INTERNAL reed block motors.. Last season I took my Merc KG9 appart to install new reeds after the old metal reeds broke up. I called Boysen and they sent double peddal reeds. Not knowing they also had single peddal reeds for it , I pushed out the reed pins and lapped the reed blocks and installed the double reeds. Put the powerhead back together took it to the lake and fired it up and had a hell of a hard time starting and after it did wouldnt idle for s--t!! I messed with the needles for at least a half hour with no luck on low end or idle.. Well I thought carbs and ingition so made sure they were 100% but still no luck . Sit and idle for a second after choking run ok than drop 2 cyl than back to 3 and then die. WTF, so I called Boysen they said nothing I already knew. So I asked them to send a new set of single peddal reeds , tore the powerhead all back down checked everthing and installed the new ones. Took it to the lake and problem solved, never idled or ran so good in low end. Done!! So I saved the reeds for another project as I thought the old KG9 didnt have enough back pressure to seat the double reeds. Well I was wrong again!! I started on my next project, 55H clone 44ci powerhead . Took it apart rebuilt it with new parts and installed those duble peddal reeds. Well took it to the lake and guess what same problem as the old KG9 wont run for s--t on bottom end or idle. Same BS!! So my next move is to get single peddal reeds for it and tear it all down again!! I have learned my lesson they just wont work in these motors. Anyone had the same problem?? Do any of you use diffrent reeds other than Boysen?? I have had good luck with them in the past but open to sugestions..

We only use single peddal on merc 44 or any other mercs.we use double peddal reeds on our 15 johnson and 45ss johnson. Had no trouble using them.

I've had good luck with Chris Carson's single petal reeds in my 44xs and 44 mod engines. His contact info is on Scream and Fly website.

What damage did the broke up stainless steel reeds do to the engine?

                Reeds

Our 44 MOD loves to eat reeds for supper. The single stage reeds are the way to go. The old Merc reed blocks are much harder on reeds when compared to the newer rubber coated pyramid style. Our engine is good for about 3 races before the tips are gone. All the steel reeds failed this spring and took out four pistons.

Somewhat surprised to hear of all the problems with the two stage reeds. I accidently ordered them a few years ago and was pressed for time so I installed them and have run the crap out of them for at least parts of 3 seasons. No issues and the mod 44 always starts in the water. Almost forgot, overrevving the motor getting on plane kills reeds quicker than anything so boat setup enters in here as well. I always ease it up as much as possible and rarely have to replace reeds even after extended running.

Blipping the throttle in short bursts also not good for the reeds but it sounds

Are you using the long stops? Are you at the max for reed height?

Spoke to Chris Carson today and he was in complete agreement with me.. The duel peddal reeds dont work in these motors. He has a great take on reeds if you speek with him. I ordered a set from him to put in the 44ci, so Ill let you know. His reeds are cut out rather than stamped out. When you stamp them out like Boysen does they crush the edges and dont always allow them to be perfectly flat when they are layed on the reed block. Now you take two of them in a stack and now you really get leaks. It causes them to rebreath the other cylinders exhaust, and not seal enough to get the next fuel charge. Big problems!! God Damit I wish I knew this before I put them in, but I guess you cant rely on manufactures products to alway be right. You end up with crap and it ends up costing you more time and money. This is how you learn and I always say you cant know it all without experence .. Cant wait to get his reeds!!

I'm with you. The newer, longer reed stops are superior to the older short ones. The short stops allow the reeds to bend and rebound, this causes the reed tips to strike the reed cage surface first when closing. That damages the reed tips pretty quickly. Reed control is important to high RPM. If you could watch the reeds function with a super slow motion camera, you'd be amazed with how much odd bending and waving they do at various RPM's.

Carson's are really good guys to deal with, and build some pretty wicked engines.
