Hi gem056. Good to see your looking at o/b hydro re-launch in Aus - any strategic plans? I'm looking at a building an OSY400 in NZ & my any ideas of how you can friend has a 44cu in hydro in original condition from 70's. Lester.

        Hydro,s

Well I hope to build 2 boats side by side , I have a good mate who has
a few historic engines a merc 4 cyl quincey , mc cullock 590 and a C class Konig all in running condition plus others

I,m hopping this may cause some interest

I have an idea to build a Hydro with a 44H or Tohatsu engine for attempt
        on the Water speed record

I raced hydro in the early 70,s when there was 15 boats in the field
then came noise problems , we had to water inject the pipes (mega phones)

I remember in the 70,s a boat from NZ came over ,in ran in the Queensland Titles , it had a Chrylser 140 race engine with open pipes

I guess that was the start of my love affair with outboard Hydro,s

Hi Russell. As a teen I was obsessed with o/b hydros but the scene died around '72 when guys entering the sport chose to go with tunnel boats with larger, more reliable engines which could be used in longer events in more open waters.
About the same time I got ill and subsequently life got in my way. There are 8hydros in existence in the South Isaland Chrysler does not sound familiar, maybe it was from the North Island.
I've got some magazine clippings from late 60's & early 70's, when I learn how to use a scanner do you want to see some?
          Good luck, Lester,

            hydro,s

            Thanks lester

Your right even me I moved to 1750cc tunnels which then become to expensive to run

Even know the cost of racing is turning the younger people off , maybe a hydro class will bring the younger people back with affordable racing

Hi Russell. Forgot to ask. You mentioned you had a friend who had some old motors. Do you know of any old hulls that may be for sale? Lester.

ps: you disappointed about not being able to win back the Ashes ?

No , most of the old boats are long gone

The ashes , I think we need a new approach , like a hole new young team

I would build a racing class around the UIM OSY 400 class. Yamato gas engines are strong, "cheap" and plentiful.

If you Aussie's knew or heard of Jack and Diane Marshall, they were close family friends and spent part of the year here in Knoxville, TN. Great people to know and they are missed.

UIM 400 would be the class to get going , you could ALLWAYS put a hydro under a 550 class motor 302

Thanks for the reply. What's the difference between a C Stock and an OSY400? I've read about Jack Marshall - he seemed to be quite inventive and something of an iconic figure. I was looking at some pics of his hydro Meteor from the '65 nationals today. Seems all eras in a sport have iconic figures who seem to embody an unrepeatable moment in history eg Bruce McLaren was an iconic figure in motorsport in my country, since his death the sport has never recovered (incidentally I'm a New Zealander not an Aussie). Almost like a line from the song American Pie ".....the day the [outboard hydro scene] music died."

                              Lester,

C Stock is a APBA class that uses Yamato 102, maybe 202 or 302 engines. Most of the boats are built of wood and mostly suited to smoother water.

OSY400 is the UIM class using all the gas Yamato engines. In the USA, boats are mostly kneeler C stock boats crossing over into the APBA PRO division. In Europe, composites are replacing wood, most all are laydowns. Hydroracer is probably the best place to get a shakedown of the exact rules, weights etc. I never knew the details because I was always a "CC" class racer.

Hopefully, someone here will fill you in on who does boat plans/kits. Maybe Darrell Sorenson, Mark Johnson or someone else can help. Have you ever thought of going on a European holliday and bringing back a boat
