  • The new era in Novice C begins!

Starting at Newberg the Hydroracer.net/TChance/McMurphy/Dick Steel/Peterson Racing/Moby Grape Racing/Anonymous Novice C class begins using our new props! Thanks to all our sponsors (listed above) as well as Harry Pinner and Rocky Peterson for making this thing happen. There will be a lot of people lining the banks of the Willamette to see how this all plays out.

Thankfully someone (Harry or Rocky?) had the foresight to order and make 4 additional props for us. Considering we had 8 Novice C's at Castle Rock I think it was a wise idea. Unfortunately during our first fund raising attempt we only raised enough to pay for 8 props, SO, if you would like to add your name to the list above as a sponsor of the Novice C prop program let me know. If we don't raise the required funds we can charge a 'prop rental fee" or something like that to get the money.

Thanks again for the generous donations to help make this a reality, I think this could make this class a blast to race and to watch.

Glen, probably around 7/8" or 13/16" would be my guess!

I am curious also as to what is the difference beside being issued a prop for the Novice class.. I think the other class has a true stock motor but not sure..

                    Novice C rules and height

Glen, we tested the original Pinner 2 blade novice C props at Eatonville last year using standard C stock setups (3/4") and the reports were that they ran fine.

Novice C runs as a standard APBA C stock, same height, weight etc. The primary differences as I see them (Dave can correct me if I get it too far wrong)

                    1) 302SS runs a sealed motor, NC doesn't
                    2) 302SS runs a stock Yamato foot, NC doesn't
                    2) Novice C now runs a standard propeller drawn at random

Ready for Newberg, Nitro Nikos the Greek from London will be there representing Moby Grape Racing in Novice C this weekend!

Not all races will have Novice C

Since Novice C is run as a local class it is up to the race director to decide to put it on the sanction or not. The ones I know of for certain are Newberg, Cullaby (Western Divisionals) and Eatonville (World Championship). It is not on the sanction for Everett due to time constraints, and it may not make it on the fall Lawrence sanction either for the same reason.

                          UPDATE for Novice C

Sorry for the delay folks, things have been busy around here. I am going to start with more good news, we just added more /'s to the name of the class. It now also contains /Gleason Racing Photography (thanks to them and everyone that bought pictures at Newberg)/Ken McMurphy/Johnson Outboard Racing/(this is really cool) Rick Herrmann in memory of Bob Montoya.

Thanks to the tremendous generosity of the hydroracer.net community, most of whom will never use one of these props, some may never even see a Novice C race, we have raised $1300 of the $1500 spent to get these props. I mentioned before that any excess funds collected will go towards seed money for any other region that wants to try this class, Harry told Rocky he's willing and able to make more props.

The racing in Novice C has produced 3 different winners, Ken McMurphy, Glen Wesanko and Ryan Magnuson, who will happily begin serving his 3 race suspension after his 3rd win. For his part Ken has told me he now considers himself a Novice C graduate. Everyone that is running a GPS in their boats have all reported speeds within 1 MPH of each other, what a great job Mr. Pinner did for us. The drivers report that the boat is not as stable or planted as with their 3 blades, but that is to be expected, and to date no one has come out of their boat running Novice C.

Since we now not only have the new props, AND also have a class that has become so popular we may have to consider what to do if we have more drivers than props, I am calling a meeting of the Novice C Racing Commission this weekend to finally lay down some rules for this class. My preference would be to have them be few and simple (like we have now). If you have any ideas or suggestion please get hold of myself, Ron Magnuson or Dave Anderson before this Sunday.

In summary we now have the Hydroracer.net/TChance/McMurphy/Dick Steel/Peterson Racing/Moby Grape Racing/Anonymous/Gleason Racing Photography/Another McMurphy/Johnson Outboard Racing/Bob Montoya Novice C class. Seems like we're going to need a bigger trophy

Tony thanks for the progress report.. I was impressed and it was no slouch class..They were moving right along and looked great with 2 blades.. I cant imagine much in the way of rules are needed beside what they use now... Please don't do like all other APBA classes and regulate the death out of them.. I think if you take a poll the drives are happy right now

As I see it the biggest difference is eligibility to run the class/purpose of the class. (Please correct me if I get something wrong).

Novice C is intended as a class where guys can get more seat time without having to race the "top guys" in the class. Therefore guys can be in the running for top results, which is great for morale/retaining interest. Guys can also learn a lot about things like getting lane 1, running in lead water, entering turn 1 together, etc. Stuff that might be a bit tough otherwise. The idea with the spec props was just to try to make an even more playing field so that there's even more of a premium places on learning those crucial driving skills.

Eligibility has always been a loose "you're eligible if you say so". The general guideline being that if you've won in regular CSH competition, or have won 3 novice C races, you're not eligible, or at least have to take a few races off. The ultimate idea being that folks will "graduate" from Novice C and then the next person/people will get there chance to run up front.

As I understand it 302ssH is open to anyone. So I could go buy one of these spec motors and start running the class. In that case then new guys would still be having to try to compete with someone with 15yrs experience, national titles, etc. The exact kind of folks disallowed to race Novice C.
