  • ASH Motor Height

I am setting up my 50's vintage A hydro with a Mercury KG4-H and I was wondering at what height should I run the motor. At this point there is about 3/4 of an inch of water above the bullet. Should I leave the motor at this height?

    ASH with KG4

Back then there was no height rule. It was what ever worked. Note that you should not measure where the bullit tip is because it is not on the center line of the prop shaft it is higher. First the props you have may only work at lower height than optimum what ever that is for your rig? So having run some ASH in the 70's with a KG4H I would start with the prop shaft level with the rear bottom surface and the rear of the prop shaft center at 1" below the bottom. Run it record top speed and rpm and note if the prop gets loose in turns or chop. If it doesn't plane over it is too high for the prop you have so go lower. Then go higher or lower and experiment as needed, try different angles like kicked out, in? Try different props. Keep good records.

Note those older hydros were not real air floaters and tended to ride with sponsons touching slightly. To get them to go you need the sponsons clear of the water. I ran a Hal Kelly Wetback (mid 50's design) in the 70's in 25ss and 20ss and it took some mods to get it to lift and ride with sponsons clear and be competitive.

Tell us more about the hull, pics, etc., what props are they?
