OROVILLE — A power boat event that is expected to draw racers from the Bay Area, Southern California, Oregon, Washington state and Nevada will cause closure to the public Saturday and Sunday on the south side of the Thermalito Afterbay in Oroville.
The Thermalito Afterbay will be closed to the public south of Highway 162. Monument Hill Boat Launch and Larkin Road Boat Launch will also be closed.
The event is the 2013 Oroville Time Trials, sponsored by the East Bay Boat Club, in Region 11 of the American Power Boat Association.
Bill Boyes of Yuba City announced the closure Monday. Boyes is a referee and chairman of Region 11. He said the club obtained a permit through the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and other agencies to hold the event and close the Afterbay.
Boyes emphasized the 2013 Oroville Time Trials is not a spectator event.
He said participants will stage in two areas: Monument Hill and a levee behind the Feather River Fish Hatchery facility on Highway 99.
The levee is the only place racers can be seen, he said.
