If you were a King for a day, how would change boat racing? How can we make it better?

    If I were King

I have been racing for sixty years and Ive seen it all ; the good and the bad and I wish I had stayed at home. We all want to win enough to pay for our hobby. We all would like to have fans that cheer for us. We all want to go out and raise money to make the above happen...well that was a stretch...I working on a race that will do all the above. We just need to get over some huddles...How to get people out from behind the tv or their hobby and see us racelll How to get the people to understand who won the race and then approch the people and tell them how you won the race...We need to become a personal and interesting racer that they would care about talking to us. I want to hear from you, if you were the boss, how would you do it?

      Off Road Racing

My son Chad Hill goes up to Glen Helen with his friends to the "Off Road" races. Chad is 35 and raced boats since he was 9. So, he knows about boat racing.

He comes back for Glen Helen, 40 miles away, to say, "Boat racing could could learn something by going to these races."

Basically they have like three kid classes: They would be like running a C Hydro with an "A" Motor, then a 20 SS motor when you get older and then a "C" motor when you are 16. One car, three, maybe four motors.

The start testing at 7:00 A.M. and test until 4:00 P.M. Then, they run the kids.....After each class, the have a podium that is spring loaded. It "POPS UP" and after a one heat FINAL per class, they give the trophies, photo opportunity, then they pull the podium down and run the next heat.

At 5:00 the start "THE SHOW". They run like five classes, 10-15 laps.

Same deal, "POP UP" podium, in front of a grand stand....

By 8:00 everything is done.....These are summer races, so no light are needed. No Sunday racing, the 20,000 campers head home Sunday morning.

I don't expect boat racing to change but I thought you might be interested how others do it!

ADD: Chad Hill may be racing in Robby's Stadium Trucks!

King for a day......appoint a KING that tells the racers what, where, when, etc. the only professional and SUCCESSFUL motorsports are run by dictatorship. And I know, no one really wants to hear that, but it is fact. You can/could take that to you bank (account).

A PA announcer can go a long ways to make a race successful. One of the best ones I have heard was at Green Iowa years ago. He would come thru the pits with a recorder and talk to the drivers. He would ask questions like where are you from, how long have you been racing the usually stuff. But he would also ask about the race you had completed what happened in the race. Then when there was some down time, class changes, tow in , etc he would play back the recordings over the PA and it sounded like he was interviewing you right on the spot. This really worked good and was interesting to the spectators.

Change Stock Outboard back to Stock Outboard so the playing field would really be even.

I would first secure a race sute that benefits our racing needs, such as pit needs, and spectator viewing, with access to the pits. We need the spectators within view of the pits and the race course.

Have large buoys so everyone can see them from the viewing area, and maybe even top half being a chekered flag or something. Something racy.

A large tent behind the judges stand so that nobody can see in there from behind.

Hire an announcer that knows what he is doing, knows the people racing, and understand boat racing. Let that announcer entertain the crowd. I found a play by play while we are racing provides some great excitment for the fans. Even if you only call out boat number instead of the name of the person. They like it to be close racing.

I would make sure our program lasted from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM, with an hour built in to last until 5:00 P.M. if we run into issues. Latest we would run is 6:00 P.M. in extreme circumstances.

Sell Pit Passes for zero dollars, just to get them to sign the waiver before entering, and get a wrist band on, and maybe get some personal info from them if they want to share.

Have one boat from each class left set up and on display, and potentially to give rides.

Hire out the turn judge positions so we can move along without issues. Unbiased, and non racers.

Only race in locations that provide the best benefits, such as tow money, and spectator attendance. Meaning, we race where we are wanted, and can promote the race. Focus on these sites to provide a quality show.

Set up some time for social hour at a local bar/restaurant for the locals to hang out with the racers and crews. Racers and crews must wear a team shirt of some sort. This is called networking..... it is pretty good buzzword in the business world today. If you create some excitments locally, and it gets talked about by those business owers, etc, you can create some serious dialog.

And if I were King, I would make sure everyone had fun.

Cool part about these 55 gallon drums, they are free.

I don't know the rule on buoys anymore. We have these 55 gallon plastic drums that are like a 1/4 inch thick. They have some give, and I have not tried to drive over them with my truck....But I've been thinking they'd make good buoys. I know for a fact when Jeff Conant hit the first turn buoy at Long Beach, the buoy never moved and Jeff flipped pretty fast.

Anyway, I think they could be used for some of the course buoys and painting them COOL looking would make sense to me!

At the Lucas oil World Finals Drags in Phoenix, Arizona, the announcer (s) are inside a trailer so the engine noisy doesn't drowned them out. The announces reads off about the boats that are going to run...They name every sponsor, every crew member and their nickname. Thanks their next door neighbor for helping out. It takes as long to introduce the boats as it takes to run 1,000 feet.

Al Estell (Think that is how you spelled his last name) could get so excited about JU Runabout racing everyone in the pits would go out on the point of land, at Modesto, to see TWO JU's going 29 MPH...He's make every race sound like this was the race to end all races....Than, in Vallejo one time with a navy Submarine came up, he started talking about the Russians invading....

You are pretty much "RIGHT ON" King Dave.... Two heat finals or winner takes ALL???

Between races, a quick Water Skiing" "Sink the champ", Jet Ski Free Style, or quick heat of ski racing.....OF course there would be a grand stand. AND until their were real bodies in the stands, families and crews would be required to sit in the stands.

1:00 P.m . Start 4:00 End No exceptions...people need to get home to the TV/Internet.

At Laughlin, Nevada, on the P.R.O.P Tour, the flat bottoms were running as a Pre Show. They had one upside down of the course...P.R.O.P Tour was to start at NOON....I told the patrol boats pull the boat out of the way, we need to start the SHOW........Dave Rankin may still be mad at me, because some paint got scratch and headers got bent.

You got to the Long Beach Grand Prix, Robby Gordon's Stadium Trucks will be running...................When their time is up, their time is UP.. THE SHOW MUST GO ON.

At Long Beach one year, I'll bet there were 10,000 people there. Dark dark when the Super Stock nationals were run, there were mayeb 200 people, all crew still there and most people had come to see the Super Stocks!

                    Ron - Buoys

                    Ron,

I wouldn't use a buoy that would flip a boat. That would casue to much time to replace/repair, locate, drag the driver and boat in, etc. I am thinking pillow type, inflatable. We used to race with some large ones in Kingston TN with the Mods. They are not cheap, but i think when we present a professional show, we should look the part, and our course layout should reflect that. Yellow Trash bags filled with beach balls does little to earn respect from fans. It might get a few laughs if someone hits the start line one and beach balls go flying, but that is about it.

One thing we always try to do in the NBRA races is a sort of parade lap, or at the least allow the race boats to come past the grandstands, or area they are seated at and wave, thumbs up, generate some excitment. I know all this stuff is common sense, but often it is forgotten.

                      Dave is King

Thanks Dave for your suggestions. I do have the crowd right in front of the launch area, we will have a snow fence between the launch and the spectators. I want the announcer in front of the spectators and between the launch area. All have a view of the race course. All drivers are announced, name, color of boat and number, and something personal, such as his occupation and if he is in school what grade, maybe his last win, etc. After the race, the first three drivers will stand a podium. Each will given a metal around his or her neck and the winner will hold the high point trophy(It will be given out at the end of the race sunday). There will be a checkered flag held by the winner. This will be done when we change the turn judges and at the end of the day. We plan to give two thousand dollars worth of door prizes and you must be there to win, this will bring people out that hold these two thousand tickets. They are given out by merchants that have given the prizes. Of Course, the largest prize will be given out after the race is over, around five o'clock. All drivers are ask to come to the podium to be there to talk to spectators and give autographs if ask. On sunday, after the races, this will be brief. We plan to have four thousand in tow money, some classes will have a winner take all five hundred dollars first place prize and one thousand for the top three high point drivers. Get to Grove ok, June 15,16.

NBRA Short Course Nationals Grove Ok June 15,16

This has a short course, but a fairly long run to the first turn. We will have yellow out side course bouys and a very large first turn bouy as well as the entry pin of the second turn. We have a helicopter there to video some of the races and to give rides. A band will play both friday and saturday nights. We will have a program and ice water that will be handed out by four of five local beauties. On saturday, we will have a car show, a vintage motorcycle show, and a in water vintage wood boat show. With the two thousand in door prizes, this will bring allot of people to Grove. We will are supported by the City of Grove, and several businesses here in Grove. We will have a kids fun spot with lots of rides for the very young. We plan to give rides in a race boat on friday during testing. I have two new drivers from Grove as well. The race manger will be Chelsea Miller and the race director will be Doc Miller. We are just getting started. Some one wanted imprinted coffee cups, well we will look into that too!

Leonard///Rick.. Would you like me to build a gas tank to give away???
My thought is to give one away to the overall winner of C-mod runabout.
Have never built one of that size,,, as I have always concentrated on the
A,,, B,,,B-1 size.. Your input would be greatly appreciated as far as size and
bolt pattern if used as a bar tank,,, or if a transom tank would be better,
you decide. Just my way of supporting NBRA.
I would rather we correspond via email and will PM that to you.
