Well get her done! Ya never know, maybe we can give Reeves or PJ a run for their money. If nothing else, test our endurance running 8 heats per day!

        Boats

Neat pic....I am in the process of building a backup boat to my D stock hydro, and it has been cold here in Seattle...mid 20s at night....cant get shop much over 50 even with heat on full...took cockpit sides into living room in my house and coated them with West System (which is getting dang pricey) and turned the heat on...next day they were ready for the jig. I will post some pics of the future 9 US for people to see...will be using a front canard made out of carbon fibre....pretty cool boat I hope.

            Epoxy

            George,
Do you build and seal the boat with this epoxy? Seems a lot less expensive than West...which is a good thing!

George It does seem a lot cheaper..Even their price for West is lower..So which stuff do you use?? Around here I have to get the fast and slow hardner for our temp swings and still the fast hardner is way to slow when it gets in the teens for temp

                Hi George,

can you make wood gas tanks with it? I've made plenty with WEST and they last forever.

There's been several good 'epoxy' threads here &/or on BRF. Something new is of interest. Ive used Systen 3 & it seems fine but is thinner than West. Any fairing work has to be on the money & multi coated because theres alot of absorbsion & little fill property. Same deal on cold cure. It has been said that if your making a tank, use West

I use System Three. Plant is in Seattle. I use the General epoxy 2 to 1. Med temp. The nbr 1 is just to hot for me even when 30 degrees. Maybe if it was 10-12 degrees I could use nbr 1. I have a Sticky Stuff pump with a heater. They have other epoxy that comes in a tube and mixes when applied.

I use there brand of epoxy and build the gas tanks with it to and they last forever. Most of the time I use the med hardner and I turn the heat off at night when Im not in the shop and it seems to harden over night ok. I seal the whole boat with epoxy but just enough to seal the grain unless it under the decks which I seal completely to keep the water from getting in the wood. The past few boats I have glued a lot of the pieces with gorilla glue which sets up fast and dont have to waste any epoxy that way. What glue that squeezes out turns to a yellow foam and scrapes right off with a sharp chisel.

I'm finishing up another sea kayak with Brand X resin. I get Brand X (no name) from B & B Yacht Design in Vandemere, NC, a dinky town on the Core Sound about 20 miles past the Last Gas sign, so the downside is - B & B won't ship it - pick up only. I still use WEST on the cedar strip deck, 105 w/207 clear hardener since that combo is more UV resistant. At 60 F. the B & B resin doesn't kick as fast as WEST. At 70 F. it works the same. Slightly more viscous than WEST which is good when coating ply or laminating glass cloth. B & B resin mixes at a 2:1 ratio. Hardener choices fast/slow.

I have been a dedicated WEST fan since the early `80s and still consider WEST the best as it offers a variety of hardeners and has never let me down. So why am I trying out Brand X? Bottom line. So far so good as far as strength, no flaws I have discovered other than limited choice of hardeners, and Brand X is $53/gallon! Yep, resin and hardener same price so for $159 I got two gallons of resin and a half gallon each of slow and fast. Doing the math WEST at retail goes $122.50 for a mixed gallon and Brand X = $53 a mixed gallon.

                          Epoxy

That stuff looks like a bargain! I was in a hurry a few weeks ago and stopped at West Marine and bought a quart of resin and a 1/2 pint of hardener. The price was close to 70 bucks! A neighbor of mine down the street is a composite engineer, and he told most epoxies have the same glueing qualities...the differences are in the hardener. I do not see any advantage in using West over the inexpensive stuff shown on this thread. Do they deliver by chance? Dave

The place I listed ships pretty much anywhere also look at the discount carbon I get that there to I think I paid 24.00 a yard for it not long ago 50 inchs wide stuff. It has white traces every so often but the disappear when the epoxy hits it. They also ship pretty fast.

This was a great thread. I learned a bunch. I finally got the CSR out of the house, much to Lynne's delight. Spent a few hours in my unheated garage, getting a 102 rigged & ready on her. Shame I had to put a cozy on my beer to KEEP IT FROM FREEZING!!!! Can't wait for Tabor City.

New Bezoat's sofa table. Lynne will be so happy when it's warm enough to epoxy in the garage.
