  • Looking to buy a GPS unit

    Hello All,

I'm looking into buying a GPS unit but am unsure of what unit to buy. Sure, ... I could use my phone along with several apps that are availible, ... but the ease of getting one wet the cost of replacing a smartphone, make it a rick I'm not willing to take.

What units good contenders for racing?

    Thanks
    Bill

E Trec. I have been searching for a gps & engine data logger. MyChron and E Trec look like the best. No GPS/motor combo in one unit that I have seen.

      Mark,

I also want to use a data logger in conjunction with real time video so I can put the information from the GPS into the video. I seems it would be very easy to dial in a ride while testing.

Did you mean E Trex? I couldn't find anything E Trec.

I've been considering a "Contour plus 2 helmet camera. One of it's features is GPS speed and tracking overlayed onto the video.
But yeah, the Garmin Etrex is a nice inexpensive GPS unit. Many racers use them.

I already have a GoPro 3 black version camera and a mount on my helmet and one mount to look under or over the bow and another for looking at prop. I am thinking of getting the program Dashware to output the info on the video.

In comparing the E Trex 20 to the E Trex 30 to see what justifies the extra $100 jump in price, ... there are only three.

            1. Electronic Compass
            2. Barometric Altimeter
            3. Unit to Unit transfers

The Mychron 4 has GPS unit available and it uses google earth to give you a pic of lake and imposes your laps with speed and rpm data for very visible feed back .

I have used Etrex to and found it vg

                Hello folks,

I almost pulled the trigger today on a Garmin eTrex 30 from REI for $269.99, ... but when looking at online reviews, this one popped up. It's the Garmin GPSMAP 78s.

It has everything the eTrex 30 has and it IT FLOATS! It is a little larger and 2.7 oz heavier with a slightly bigger screen. Here is a comparison chart.

                They are $287.99 here, ... http://www.starmarinedepot.com/Garmi...FYl_Qgodd1IAVg

                Any Opinions?

                Regards

                  Velocitek SpeedPuck

I have a Velocitek SpeedPuck for sale with the software and license, used for 1 season.

                  http://www.velocitek.com/speedpuck/

Really good stuff, big display, records, download to display lines on maps, speeds, etc. Can export info to Excel to calculate and can find acceleration rates, etc. Great tool.

I run full data acquisition now, so no use for it anymore.

                  $250 plus shipping.

                    Jay,

That certainly looks like a great deal. However, I have more uses for the GPS unit than speed and heading. It seems like a great buy for someone looking for a clean and simple installation as it doesn't have all the tubing that is usually associated with a speedo. Sure wish I would have seen these before I bought a speedo for my other boat.

                    Regards

I forgot to include the comparison chart showing the differences between the eTrex 30 and the GPSMAP 78s.

                      Here it is.

                        Hey All,

After some thought, I bought the Garmin GPSMAP 78sc. West Marine had them and a $50.00 discount code brought it within reason. I decided on getting the "sc" version over the "s" version because it came with the US coastal maps built into it leaving the full 1.7g internal memory intact. I do a lot of fishing of the coast of So. Cal. and the islands, so this works out perfectly.

Here is a video of the unit. It's all I have until it arrives.

The GPS unit arrived last week and I have been playing with it ever sinces. Boy, ... this thing is slicker than snot. It takes a little bit to learn how to use the thing, but I'm guessing it's because I haven't owned a GPS unit before other than my cellphone and there is soooooo much stuff on it, I'm not sure I'll ever get to using it. The screen is great, I can see it in direct sunlight, shade or darkness. It came with a nice preloaded detailed map of the US coastline and I bought a couple of maps, West coast 24K topo, and City Navigator, ... Pricey, but worth every penny!

Oh, ... did I mention, ... It Floats!
