That's easy I said - DeFeo. I searched out my copy of Speed and Spray and I was right - if you had asked 1974. Lots of A's there .

The next time I went there Tom Goode was the fastest ASH . He had a cast for a broken leg and , of course , fell out of the boat. He was a little discourager but a bunch of people ran overand we got to work. The biggest guy carried Tom out of the tow boat and put him in a chair. We turned the boat over and drained it, drained the gas tank and I dried out the carb and cylinders and got it started. Plugs in, prop on, carry Tom out and put him in the boat. The engine almost didn;t take but I held onto the steering bar , got towed along and it finally caught. Tom won the second heat.

Are you sure, Dayton 1977? By the way Jeff Hutchens was second in A Outboard Hydro at the 1977 Alky Nationals in Hinton.

Jeff Hutchins won at Dayton in 1975 and again in 1979.

Coop is correct - I found the results sheets in my old prop case. Dave Hoggard won ASH in 1972 at Cedar Rapids, Steve DeFeo won in Utah in 1973 and again in Dayton in 1974, Jeff Hutchins won in Dayton 1975, Chuck Zolkoske won with Andy Hansen's boat at Hinton in 1976 and I won at Bakersfield in 1977. I was there in Dayton '75 and had the fastest ASH time of week in elims but my airtraps fell off in the finals (yea, yea all old boat racers have a story.....)

Other winners that year include Ernie Dawe DSR, Larry Reber 25SSR, Shannon Bowman CSH, Ray Hammond BSR, Todd Nelson JSR, Jeff Hutchins 25SSH, Wayne Parrott 36SR, Louis Howard 15SSH, Andy Hansen ASR, Ron Hill Super CR, Billy Simmons Super CH, Scott Shuman JSH, Richard Rees CSR, Matt DAgostino DSH, Fred Townsend BSH, Don Roseberry 15SSR.

As Ron noted above, winning a Nationals in those days with so many boats always involved an element of luck.

1977 ASR.. Craig Selvidge never lost a race that year if I remember correctly. Very impressive for back then, considering the tuff competition and the amount of boats. To this day I still think that is one of the most impressive accomplishments in SO racing.

I Think The D Hydro Winner for 1975, Dayton, Might Be Wrong

I won't cover the details, but....

There was a lot of "Tradition" in the "A" Class........The most impressive win I ever saw was Steve DeFeo's 1974 win....Something like 11 Hedlund hydros, and one Craig Craft....Craig Craft was half lap ahead! Steve's motor appeared so stock in inspection (I snooped when they inspected my D)....

Craig show me his good A Wheel, and explained why he thought it was fast.....I don't forget things!

BIG DON, different class but I also won every D Runabout race in 1977, and broke the competition record....Just an FYI!

Didn't know that you won every race in 1977. I do know that you had one very fast DSR back then. Congrats, very impresive also.

                        Most of The Credit

Most of the credit for my Stock Outboard success can be traced to my father, Russ Hill, Sr. My dad built a solid motor....the rest was easy!

                        ADD:

Craig Selvidge's "A" wins is much more impressive than my "D" wins.

Steve DeFeo's boat in 1973 was the first one of that style the we made for competition- I finished that one in 1972. Craig made him a new one in 1974 that he won the Nationals with that year and my 1972 boat was second behind Steve with Al DeSiato drving. Steve's win in Utah was impressive as well as at Dayton in 1974 - he was the only who figured out how to get it ripping in the altitude in Utah in '73. The KG-4's had a tough time pulling the props that worked great at sea level.
