In 1956, Paul Woodruff Said It
I was 12 in 1956 at my first nationals in Cambridge, Maryland. Paul woodruff was the defending D Runabout national Champion. He said, "Winning a Nationals is really hard, you need to be lucky to be getting everything together on one day."
I thought at the time, "He's just saying this because he's the Champion."
I finished 3rd, and felt lucky I got what I got, but also felt, I could have done better....I watch D Runabout, and I especially watch Paul...Paul also had a cute daughter...Paul turned sideways, and flipped. I thought, "Wow!"
I went our to his pits when the pulled him in and saw his steering pulley had broken. A defending Champion drives from Oregon to Maryland only to have a pulley break.
After that I thought, maybe winning any Championship wasn't easy.
I was busy in 1975, I was defending Nationals Champion in D Runabout. My dad and built and new boat that I sold to John Grant to be delivered in Dayton after the Nationals.
I didn't race D Runabout all year, but I felt ready, I had a new Fickett tank on my new DeSilva "C" Runabout and my new D Runabout.
My dad had built Dave Procknow a Mark 30-H that ran well, he almost won the 1973 C Hydro Nationals with it. Dave and I tested before Dayton in Janesville, Wisconsin. His motor was faster than mine. So, when we got to Dayton, I borrow his 30-H and set top time in the C Runabout qualifier.
I had visions of a double win. Problem was, my vent hoses on my Fickett tanks sucked up water. Dave failed to qualify in C Hydro. I finished 9th in D Runabout and worse in C Runabout.
I had borrowed Reed Riddle's Super C and put it on a borrow Hill runabout and I won Super C....There were several bad spills and an accident or two in Super C. I was quite proud that I didn't go on my ass out there and thought it was a great class, of course it went away before the next year...
Paul Woodruff's words....Now my words, "Any Championship big or small takes some luck and it isn't easy."
ADD: When we got home from Dayton, we found a quart or more of water in my gas tanks.
It ain't easy to win Nationals! Everyone, big or small means something. I won the Havasu Outboard World Championship with 128 entries. Beating Ted May when he had his 20-H and I had my 30-H was just as much fun....I beat Ted four heats one time......only at trophy presentation did I tell him I could hear him behind me....I drove him all over that river that weekend.......and I never once looked back... Racing should be fun...Ted may and I were racing C Alky Hydro.....we were fighting for a third place trophy and I WON!Last edited by Ron Hill; 01-04-2013, 04:39 PM.
