When we look at our sport, we see a decline and there doesn't seem to be a slope we can get off of..You, a racer or many that just love the sport can do something about it. We find good sites, talk leaders of the community and then close the deal. It is not that easy and said in one sentence. I've driven many miles to check out a lake, often to find that they only allow ten horse power motors or there isn't a thriving community in miles. We have always been able to sell races on bad sites, the trick is getting a sponsor to put up money on a great site. We have very limited success in finding a major sponsor that can put up fifty thousand for a series of races. Mercury Motors did give us some support twenty years ago, but that history. The USTS series has some talent workers that keep their program going, but that is far from the years when each state had their own ten race seasons. As we get smaller the travel increases and thus so does the expense of travel. Car racing has a major advantage over our sport, because most travel very little. Drag racing has travel, but they have large purses that stimulate their sport. So, if you want to race for money, to pay for the ever increaseing cost of travel, then go out and sell a race for something more than trophies.

Sure Thing
Doc,
The NBRA has all you are saying. I think if you sit back and think about the direction we are heading, you will realize something. Boat Racing is far from over... We don't need 50 sites to have a good season. What we have is some very quality venues that give us a lot. We are establishing ourselves within those communities, and they give us support. We don't burn it out racing there 2 or 3 times a year, we just put on one GREAT Event per season at the location. Think about it Doc, just keep on building upon what you already have, and if you find a better location in mind, in your area, go for it. Take a year or two to get all the money lined up, and all the needs taken care of. Boat racing is far from being in as bad shape as you might make it out to be. The NBRA is growing, and we are doing some things currently that will seriously change the game. A lot of irons in the fire right now, we should focus on making what we have as good as it can be. If we focus on making the event attractive and not focus on the racing so much the future is bright, and full of support.... racers will make due with what is handed them, they always do.Dave Mason

Living a Dream
Thanks Dave, for your encourageing remarks. I just remember to well the days of testing on Sat. and racing on Sund. every weekend. I have sold three races with purses of 14,000. dollars for next year, but my goal is to get others out there beating the bushes. It has been good racing NBRA, but we need to do more, because there are great places to race that we have not found..Clyde Bayer once said 'I'm the happiest when I am on the way to a race'. We all are full of excitement and anticipation...just living a Dream.
