  • Fair or Foul? Really?

Anyone read the new Propeller article about team driving and a supposed unfair attempt at a high point? It is entitled "Fair or Foul?"

Interesting that an attempt to buy a way into the Hall of Champions by protesting a non-speed advantage boat violation against a clear winner on the race course was not mentioned in this article about "ethics". Seems to me the writer missed the biggest current issue when composing this piece.

Interesting topic, I'll start. We have rules regarding unsportsmanlike conduct and to me team driving falls into that category. With all the personal relationships in our sport though, it would be difficult to police this type of occurrence. A yellow card should be issued in a blatant case. Personally, I don't know any race official with the fortitude to enforce an unsportsmanlike conduct charge on anybody in a case like this. Kinda sad really.

      Can you see me now!

Everyone knows right from wrong but, sometimes people want, need or can't accept the results of right or wrong so they bend things a little to get what they want or need often somehow self justifying as in "it is or is not in the rules". But every one knows right from wrong and who did or did not win the race.

Is it unsportsmanlike to score the touchdown when you are up by 30+ points at the end of the game or is it unsportsmanlike NOT to score it?

How do you penalize someone for not driving hard when they don't need to drive hard. Isn't taking a knee on the 1 yard line at the end of the game the same thing?

I find that crying "unsportsmanlike" is only done by the losers... If they were out front, they wouldn't need to cry. Go win the race and you won't need to complain.

there should be a rule for blantant acts of unsportsmanlike acts or bringing the sport into disrepute.
In that other sport I do when the wind blows and you can get a global ban from competing for a single act of bad behavior in a local club race.
That covers cheating thats not in the rule book.

Tony: The writer of the article apparently sees it that way. I am just pointing out that the writer missed the biggest issue in APBA when writing it.

The football analogies are not quite the same thing. Piling on points at the end of a game benefits the winner by sending a message of intimidation to future competitors. Not scoring a final touchdown is a choice by the coach to do what he thinks is necessary to win and no more. Taking a knee implies that there is no reason to jeopardize injury as the clock runs out which again benefits the winner.
Backing off to let your teammate pass for the sole purpose of screwing another competitor is not sportsmanlike, in my opinion. Your teammate needs to earn it himself.

                      No more rules

Whatever the opinion, we absolutely do not need more rules, we can't even enforce the ones we have.

I don't like team driving, but at the end of the day it is part of the course and ?i have to over come it as a driver. If someone is called for a driving infraction or a safety violation then then should be disqualified. The race on the course should be judged objectively.

If you open up the race course to ruling by the opinion of a referee or judge by what the think was intended we are heading down a path we do not want to take.

We cannot make calls based on intent only by occurance.

For instance: What if intended to cut you off in the corner but I just couldn't pull it off and you squeak through. Yellow card?

Great point. If you were at Dayton you would have seen that in BSR I intended to cut Ed off in every corner but was only successful in 1!

We have two drivers in the hunt, but they both want to win,,neither would pull over for the other, they both want to win..

Boy Len, truer words never spoken! Saw the two of them at Lucas and there was no team driving there. Two very good drivers with great equipment, taking it to one another.
