"New" 302 Question

  • "New" 302 Question

    A question I should know the answer to but don't. If one was to purchase a "New" 302, what needs to be done to make it Race Ready? Approximate cost etc would be appreciated too..Thx!!

    Ok, here is the list, If I leave something out someone will chime in I'm sure.

    1) Kill switch diode
    2) cc the head and cut to spec
    3) have the bore honed to give 4.5-5 thousandths piston skirt clearance
    4) change to 9/16" prop shaft
    5) shape foot
    6) check for the top of the tuned exhaust for flatness
    7) check reed stop height
    8) some say hone rods, I've got 1 honed one not, can't tell the difference
    9) replace " o " ring in needle assembly
    10) put fuel filter in fuel line
    11) get rid of the screen in the actual tank, it can clog
    12) break the edge on the exhaust port, I'm not saying " chamfer " that is different
    13) stock 302 does not have spark plug boots, I recommend OMC boots and sparkies
    14) set timing between 225 and 240
    14) call TJ

    That should get your " stock " motor going fairly well

        Yes Roger you should know this....................sorry you left yourself wide open fore that one buddy. All kidding aside "race ready" is a relative term relating to how much you want to spend assuming you are hiring the work out. Assuming you are buying a motor fresh from Japan at a minimum you will need to change the prop shaft have the gear foot shaped and a have it wired for a kill switch. From there you need to be very careful as to what you do. My advise is to talk to TJ.

            Roger I spent about $2900 to have all the things, listed above, done for me by Ric Montoya and shipped to my door.

                You don't HAVE to replace the propshaft with a 9/16", as long as you use your own props made for the stock shaft. Everybody replaces the propshaft simply because everybody else does it.

                  Unfortunately thats not an option in Region 6 (yet?). The variation of 302SSH thats coming our way is intriguing, but really limits what you can do w/motor (as far as racing any other class..not sure it enough "Bang for The $$$)

                    I think the bang for the buck comes in place when you can go out and run the 302ssh class, then, if you don't care for it, or feel that you've 'outgrown' it, you can have probably $500 worth of work (estimated) to the motor and have a CSH/CSR/25SSR/20SSH motor and not have to go through another buy and sell process to get another rig.

                    And, contrary to our conversation we had the other day Roger, I think we may have enough to run the 302ssh at least at MHRA races in 2013... only 3 boats are needed to run... we may have 4 with you?

                        I've been putting together a new 302 from Ric. Plan on the whole experience to have it "race ready" being about 2-3 months! That is unless you do all the things yourself, but
                        it will still be a long process.

                          Roger 302SSH

                          Roger 302SSH is the way to go. It is a cost controlled class. I will be pushing for us to run it 3/2 at all the MHRA weekends. It will be where we steer all the new Racer School members.....and wait for it.....you will be competitive right out of the box every weekend. It is the way for you to go!! I believe we will have four members in it next year. T.J is interested, Bonefant (maybe), Wellings is thinking about one, and maybe two Decks. We will most likely get two sealed motors in the club for Racer School. I really think this is the class of the future.

                          For example, I just got whooped at Dayton by Pater and Pavlick with my "good" motor. I tore it down yesterday and went to by closet of parts and pulled out every set of 102 cylinders I have. I will be sending the block out soon to try another "blueprint" and re-set the crank. It is going to be 6-8 hours of work and probably about $600.00 and it may get worse not better. Or I could race "sealed" 302SSH where the driving counts more and load the trailer up on Friday knowing I have a chance to win!

                          It's an easy choice.

                              Prop Question

                              Can one bushing a prop to fit the 302 ? Is that legal ? Might be a lot cheaper than buying and installing a 9/16" shaft. Serious questions, as I don't know what the stock size is.
