  • The first two boats I built

I've only built about six including these, but ya gotta start somewhere. Both were built for a K&B 3.5cc outboard. The blue boat was built in about 1977 and the yellow one about three years later. They were much faster than the then availiable kit tunnel boats from either Dumas or Prather. As trial and error goes, the blue boats sponsons were too shallow. The yellow boat had too much lift.

At my local club lake, I had to wait to run alone, because my boats turned left and all model racers turn right. I tried to get them turn right, but they just wanted to spin. K&B even came out with a longer skeg because the tunnels suffered too. I went as far as to use a transom mounted turn fin. After awhile, I joined them and bought two Lee tunnels.

They sure were alot of fun. I always ported the exhaust elbow and the passage through the tower housing. On 40% nitro, they would run with the 7.5cc tunnels.

    Afterplanes on a Pugh hydro?

I don't think that I've ever seen a Pugh hydro with afterplanes - until now.
    ...

OMC FE/SE powerhead parts for sale. Kurcz ported block, Mod 50 pistons and cylinder head, exhaust, etc.

      Nice model boats, epugh66!

Are those scaled from full size Pugh plans? If so, 1/4 scale?

I have also built outboard hydro models for the K&B 3.5. And I agree, they are faster than the tunnels. But getting them to turn to the right like the other model boaters is extremely difficult. I have been fighting this too. I've tried rear fins and even moved the turn fin all the way back to the c/g...even behind the c/g. The prop rotation just wants to walk the transom around.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the pics.

They're fun and it doesn't hurt when you crash.

David, actually one 250 boat was built with the Butt's style after planes. It was Gary's first 250 and it was built about 1977 too. Both models had them. The yellow boat just got them filled in. And then as more nitro was added, they were extended back to help with the blow over problem.

Bill, I scaled them from a C service boat. Dont know what I was thinking there, well I was 13. I think it was closer to 1/8 scale.

7-D, those rockwalls are tough. Ask John Steven about the side of a bass boat

I'm thinking we should all build some new ones and run after the races are done each day. Left turns ONLY!!!

I remember Gary's first 250 CCH boat because I bought it from Gary. The sale took place at a race just outside of Atlanta, Ga. I don't think that boat weighed 100 lbs, but it was fast and turned great. The bad part was it was built to light which made it very flimsey. However, for his first boat ever, it was a tremendous feat. Gary has come along way since then and builds some very fine boats.

                Nice boats Eric

After reading this thread I found myself in the darkest reaches of my storage shed and found this old thing It started life as a Dragonfly 20. But I cut on it til it looked like it doe's now I know what you mean about turning right. After a while my brother said, wy dont you try locking the engine stright and put a rudder on the side. It worked realy well even worked better after cutting the skeg off the motor

                Big problem was blowing over.
I ran my K&B 3.5 soooo tweaked (30k + rpm on 60% nitro ) you kould never hold it WFO in the straits.

I ran with the tunnel boats, Iwould allways pass on the outside

                They hated that

                Great fun and good times

Thats nice Jeff. I know what the Dragon Fly 20 looked like and its not too visible in your final boat. Surely alot of work with good results.

Here's a picture of my latest R/C outboard hydro.

Jeff, I like your drag-n-fly. I built one too. You were able to really change the kit quite a bit. Looks good and with a driver as well. I bet the extra weight of the driver was not a problem. I see the JDS kit in progress too (in the background of your pic). Let us know how that's coming along.

Any other R/C outboard hydros out there?

                      Bill B.

I just may have to dust off the engine and build a boat too. Tunnels are ok, but hydros are way cool!
