  • Yamoto kill switch

I need to know how many wires do you need to have from the Yamoto motor up to the kill switch or switches thanks guys

    should be 2 wires on a 80 or 102, and 3 wires on a 302

A 302 Yamato works quite well with just a two-wire kill switch like any other motor- IF you have done your electrical homework. As manufactured, the 302 ignition requires each cylinder to be grounded separately to shut it off. You certainly can do it with two kill switches but one switch works quite well when you simply put a diode in the lead from each cylinder and hook the output of those diodes together to go to the kill switch. We've used relatively inexpensive diodes (under $1 apiece) to do this for years and laugh at the guys who have complex rigging to two switches. Some Hot Rod ignitions also work this way and inspectors have been lax in checking that they ground out both cylinders.

Hydroplay is right, this works well.

Or you could just buy a three wire kill switch like we run in our pro's.

Be careful with the 1.00 Radio Shack diodes, as they sometimes fail, and then your kill switch does not work properly. It will not harm the motor, only make the switch inoperable.

At $1 you could use 2 in series for saftey if you are saying they fail closed in the reverse direction rather than open both ways

Wouldn't it be easier and safer to use a 3 wire kill switch????

We only use 600 volt rated diodes originally sold as a common microwave oven part. I have installed them in at least 6 302 motors and haven't had a problem with any. If you buy lower rated ones, you may have an issue as CD ignitions do have substantial voltages for the diodes to contend with.

                  safer ??

                  "mechanical switch , or diode"
-the answer depends on how old u are.
You and I would go with the switch,
-'young' Sam would want the diode.

hydroplay Sam is probably right, seems to me the primary voltage on the CDI mags is often in the 400v range. That may explain the failure of the $1 radio shack diodes

Mercury offers a diode package for hooking 2 outboard motors to one switch for about $25. The package is nice and clean; open the box, cut off their plugs, add it to the mag. It was designed for our needs.

What is the 302 switch Ric has for $50.00???

The $50 switch is 3 wire switch. When the clip is pulled all 3 terminals are connected together. The switch is the same as the old Konig switches that Scott Smith use to sell. Commonly see in most pro boats.
