    1980 Sue Marcel

Just a couple of weeks ago I had an email exchange with Sumi (Sue), she is living near San Diego and just returned from some intense biking in France. We sold Bud Marcel, Sumi's dad, their first race boat way back when there was a stock outboard race every weekend from April to October. The attached picture is of her in JSH.

      83 - 84

I was good friends with Brad Banting and his family. They also ran JMR and JMH. I can recall many an evening sitting around the campfire at the races (we all camped at the time) and whooping it up. I am trying to remember the last time I talked to them, and I think it was around 5 - 10 years ago.

Brad was tough to beat in his hay days.

          Super 5HP, 60 J, and 15A's

J started with the Spuer 5 and then the Super Silent Six was allowed, too. Then, what year did the 60 J come about, and then what year did the 15A take over?

What year did JSH get started?

Some very "GREAT" Races at Nationals in JSR, that IO can recall.

Russ Wolfe ran like a 20 inch wide bottome DeSilva looking boat with a screw on one inch after plane that had a 1/8 hook in an inch....I didn't think it would run, but the boat "FLEW". Most J Runabouts had like 34 " bottoms at that time....

I think the 60J came out in 1968. Jsh started in 1965 or 66

Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.

True parity is one motor per class.

It's RACING, not just another boat ride!

Looking at these names.... Other then the last 8 years and names like Difebo,Dillard and Hearn. Have any of the other people stayed in racing long?

I am pretty sure JSH started in 1965 as that was the year that I got 1US in ASH and ran JSH on the same boat as well as running ASR and also the year I started running BSR with a 20H conversion. OMC J was 1988 for first year as that was the year Sean won JSH Nationals.

OK, Maybe I should ask this a different way. Other the Hearn and Difebo from 1949-1996 are any of those families still involved with racing? I know from 97 till present most still are

                          Yup

Billy Schumacher, who won in 1955-56, is the owner of the U-37 Beacon Plumbing boat that J Michael Kelly drives.

Some racers just don't go away.....

Todd Nelson and Wyatt Nelson Brothers???

I know the first Champion, Roy Ridgel, worked for Mercury marine until he retired. He stayed active in boat racing all his life.

Shawn Love still races now and then in 45 with his brother, Spencer. Spencer makes all the 45 races out west!

Personally, I think there is a large percentage of these driver's and families still in racing. If wee had this percentage for C Hydro we'd have about 2,000 more members.

rSue Marcel is now involved in Bike racing. She and her brother Tommy totally withdrew from our sport when their Dad, Bud Marcel, passed on.
