  • Tohatsu question

The grey wire from the ignition box, should it be plugged in or unplugged. And do I need to have the recoil on the motor if I have electric start. It must weigh a few pounds.

Alex you must no the answer.

Here's a list of wires that are not connected in my Tohatsu ignition box: (manual start)
    1. The white wire from the stator
    2. The yellow wire from stator
    3. The black/white wire from switchbox
    4. The black/yellow wire from switchbox
    5. Two sky blue wires from switchbox both labeled #4
    My motor is a 2006 model. I don't have a grey wire.

A brown wire from the switchbox goes to my kill switch.
As to the your recoil question, I dunno. I've never considered removing my recoil, so I've never looked it up in the rulebook. I started to look it up, but decided I spent enough time getting this list of wires for you.

Alex can take it from here.

Thanks Jeff. I have read a few post saying to cut or unplug the grey wire coming out of the ignition box. Maybe its a rev limiter. Not sure

First, regarding the rewind. Nothing in the APBA Inspection Rule say you can run without the rewind on the engine. Perhaps we can get that rule changed this coming January. However, the rewind weight is 3.1lbs, AND the non-rewind cowl is not really a legal item Removal of the rewind on a rewind cowled engine leaves a hole in the front of the cowling where the rewind handle lived. That could be construed as a performance advantage (ram air hole??_).

Next we have the 'wiring' dilema. Regarding the "grey" wire... In all my wiring diagrams, none show a "grey" wire coming from the CD pack. So, to begin, I'd ask you HOW MANY wires come from your CD pack?? AND, what are the colors of each wire?? AND... what is the part number on your CD Pack (assuming there is a number on it)??

I have to wonder who the persons you are referring to regarding CUTTING the GREY wire. Because, I wonder what CD pack THEY are working on. The M50D2 packs that I am familiar with do not have a Grey wire.

The Rev Limiter wires are the Black/Yellow wires - they should NOT be connected when racing.

The 2 BLACK wires from the CD pack: one connects to the black wire coming from the STATOR. And, the other one needs to be connected DIRECTLY to the cylinder block.

Hope I have helped some. Please email me with your answers to the above or post them here on HR.

              Holes

Good point Alex...and the rules also state that all of the holes in the pan have to be covered...would be a bummer to get tossed for something like that...

                Additional wires..

........... I would also suggest that you install a tether wire from the engine to a solid point on your hull, just in case they decide to seperate.

and nothing in the rules says you CANNOT run without a rewind (Merc has the same situation).............I ran the first year with electric start ONLY and ELECTRIC start cowl........then realized I need to shed the weight, so off with the electric stuff and back to the manual setup............its not a perfomance advantage, so no need to add more rules, etc......................let's go racing boyz..............

whats this I hear YOU ALEX is not gonna be at the Nats??????? Tell me isn't so, cuz you said you were buying drinks for all us D guys!!!!

                      More on the wire

Mark.. regarding the "grey" wire(s) Looking at a couple CD packs I have, it's kind of obvious that the BLACK wires actually turn sort of gray looking. That's why I asked how many wires you have coming out of your pack. Because if you DO have "gray" wires in addition to black wires... then, I'm stumped.

Also, as you probably know from other motors, the gray wire is often a tach wire. And, as such it surely could be cut and blocked off.

I also agree with Daren (aka MercGuy) that we just need to "go racing" and not worry about removing a rewind or running a non-rewind cowling. Only glitch being that at a Nationals event... technicalities are often interpreted differntly by people who are trying their best to be fair & balanced (bbbburrpppp.... arrrrghtttttshhh...phewwwwttt....moooooossssse!!)

                      See you at Thompson!!
