  • Painting The Boat

Boat is repaired, time for paint. Can I use automotive paint or should I
use paint that is made for wood. I was wondering about this since wood
and metal may expand and contract differently.

    Sincerely,

    Doug 87-P

I've had both my boats painted with automotive paint and they've turned out great!! After the clear coat n wet sanding we buffed it just to make shine better
My anger management class pisses me off!!

So-Called boat paint is mostly for marketing.

Use acrylic enamel with some hardener in it. The paint is not being applied on bare wood anyway. If the boat is covered in epoxy (as it should be) the paint will adhere to a properly sanded surface without even the need for primer. You should avoid too many coats of paint anyway as thicker paint films are more prone to failure than thin ones. The color selection in the automotive paint books is huge so if you liked the color on some 70's Mustang or AMC Gremlin they (NAPA for one) can mix whatever color you want.
