You Tube Video Quality

I am seeing a lot of folks post You Tube videos of their races. I see one common thing that I can't overcome. If I am a surfer (web) and come across one of the many videos on You Tube, and I sit and watch it from start to finish, I have no idea what I just watched.

Is there a way to get the starting clock and the flags to be captured by these little helmet cams ? Basically judes stand is not ever seen in the videos, so it in no way looks like a race to some outsider without inside knowledge. Is this something all you video guru's can try to capture on each lap ? I think it would be important for exposure to the sport. Or am I way off base here ?

The field of view on most of the Go Pro Hero camera or other similair is very narrow. We use one in my son's race car and when you get to the edges of the video you can see the light poles curve like a bow due to the lens. If the camera was mounted on the boat the camera is only going to see 30 degrees or so in the direction the camera is pointed. If mounted on a helmet the driver would have to be looking right at the clock for it to appear in the video.

In the race car we can hook up the camera to a iphone with a GPS app that will track the cars location on the track, record the lap times and with some other do dads the rpm etc. This appears right in the video which is real neat. Would be nice to see one made for us boat racers,

Different Clock ?

Would it help to have a larger more viewable clock ? I hope of all the videos I have seen that the racers did look at the judges stand. Just can't pick it out in the video perhaps.

Anyway, just a thought to make a video have more meaning to the outsider.

I understand your concern Dave. I agree with David V. and would like to add that these iddy biddy cameras are made to view things that are 0 to maybe 50 feet away from the camera. They just don't have the focal length to show things that are distant (not very well anyway). It might work to synchronize a helmet camera video and judges stand video (or turn boat) and make a picture in picture video. Just a thought.

You are not way off, the problem is that these guys are uploading raw unedited footage to YouTube which is basically for fellow racers and enthusiast. The GoPro HD Hero footage posted by most teams would make great insert and cut away rolls into a full blown race recap segment. The type of footage you are referencing needs to be a full blown race recap shot with a standard camcorder. A complete race recap takes decent editing skills along with post production editing software like Final Cut Pro etc.

This is what you mean :-) I have said it a million times now and have been saying it for years that this is where the APBA should have spent their money. A full blown production team would have been a far better investment then some of the current projects.

You can shoot an entire race recap or promo clip using just the GoPro you had better have some mad edit skills :-) you also need about a half a dozen cameras to pull it all together.

Buy six GoPro cams and send him or her to the races. They hired Crown Partners.

Sounds like the You tube videos will just have to remain for the racers and their friends.

If filmed from shore the quality can be much better I understand.

Dan, I don't think many of us can afford to hire anyone to film us while racing (personally). I don't even own a helmet cam. But I have a mounting deal on my helmet for one.

I also feel Dan should come to Lucas Oil and produce a film to release.... hint hint.
