  • Checking Serial Numbers

Does anyone know where to locate serial numbers on Mercury Mark 55H? I have one that does not have the transom plate. So I really would like to verify it is a true Mark 55H. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    serial #

look on top of the block - possibly near a pipe plug. The carb mounting studs will fit a KA carb ( from the factory not relocated ) - 40 ci.

Correct, the serial number is stamped on top of the block, but ...

real 55H studs do NOT fit regular KA's. They fit Carter N's and the special KA with wider holes for the Carter pattern, the KA7A.

So what is the hassle to remove the top crowling to see the top of the block?

Disconnect the choke rod, then remove the 4 nuts on the cowl studs.

There are spacers on the studs. Don't drop them and loose them. Probably easiest to glue them on to the studs so they don't fall off while putting the top cowl back on.

Thanks Sam, I am trying to sell this motor and really don't want to tear it apart and not get it back together correctly. So is this a 10minute job or half day.

                top removal

                Hi Sam,
I have taken lots of tops off. Time varries from 6 min to an hour or more.

                  I agree.

I have struggled with a few tops as well, but never with one that looked as nice as Steve's motor.
