  • Transom

    Hey everyone,
If I want to run either an OMC or a Mercury engine is there any way I can have an adjustable transom bracket for my motors?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Shim block

If you have the transom at the proper OMC dimension to start , you can use a shim ( same thickness as the transom and 1 1/4 high ) block sandwiched between 2 aluminum plates -to slip over the top of the stansom to make up the Mercs diference. Easy to slip on and off. a couple of 5/16 bolts thru the plates will secure it to the boat.

I'm just trying to imagine this in my head. So there are two aluminum plates that are fastened to the transom using some bolts right? Then the wood block is put between these two plates. The plates are removable because you just remove the bolts. Lastly what exactly is the correct height for an OMC setup?
Thanks so much for your help,
      Dan

        engine height

Tell us more about the boat you are dealing with and what you are using it for. Also measure the present transom height in a vertical direction to the bottom planing surface.

          No Bracket Necessary

On our B&H Hydro transom we just screw a 2 inch wood block on the original transom for the Merc and then remove it and run the OMC right on the transom and it is dead on the legal measurement...........the trick is to make sure the transom height is right on the 'edge' for the OMC as to allow the Merc to still get grip on the natural transom. Not sure where Brockport is but if you are near Long Island you might want to look up George Luce. He will fix ya right up!

We have never had a issue with the Merc coming loose and the boat has been fairly sucessful over the years............good luck.

              Transom "Shim" adapter

              Mike,
When we bought a B&H from Howie Nichols several years ago, it had a transom as Matt describes. The "Block" was held down to the boat transom by 3 4 inch deck screws. I have built one recently for Marlee's current boat that sandwiches the transom, it is held in place by 4 5/16 in bolts and can be installed/uninstalled in about 2 minutes I will post pictures later today

                Hey everyone,
Since I am new to the racing scene (and young), I have a limited budget. I have a Glen-L Tiny Titan and a 1974 Evinrude 15 hp. What is the rtansom height for an OMC?
                Thanks again,
                Daniel

The OMC transom height they are referring too only is intended for the racing class that uses a special racing gearcase with a low water pick up. In your application with the stock gearcase on your 1974 OMC try shiming your engine up until you have the cavitation plate 1" higher than the bottom of the boat. This will help get higher revs but still supply enough cooling for the engine. I have attached this picture to show you how we did it on one of my sons lake racers to get the engine higher. Good Luck!

Team Stillwill uses 3 screws which are all Snell Approved like our Helmets.......

Are these screws painted one of the proper safety colors? I hope the paint doesn't make them weaker.......

Hi ; I have always had a "U" shaped plate made up out of 1/8" aluminum which slides down over the transom. I drill 2 rows of screw holes at 3/4" OC in both front and back of the plate for attachment to the transom. The transom height can then be raised in 3/4" increments (with 3/4" blocks fastened on top of the transom) by just removing and re-installing these screws in the plate. The screw centers obviously have to be drilled accuarately on center.

Here is how we did it.

This is how we extended a transom to fit a Yamato 302 that was cut for a 102.

                              Hope it helps
