    what George said. Back in the `80s I got a roll of twisted strand Aramid fiber line from some raceboat supply place on the west coast that was near triple the break strength of the 3/16" vinyl coated steel cable I had been using. And the line did not spring off (uncoil) the steering drum when cables were slack. AND the synthetic line was still good to go years after UV had turned the vinyl coating yellow and brittle to the point were it cracked off the steel cable.

    There are several synthetics out there that kick steel cable butt. That's why I used 4mm Spyderline for the catamaran shroud lines = lighter, stronger, easier to work with, and easier to handle.
