KA or KC
Jeff, The 1" venturi KA came on most of the old 44 Mercs. My own experience says that KA's are best. Most KA's have a 1" venturi, that's what you want. They give great throttle response and start easy.
The KC's come in different venturi sizes. If you feel you must try them, I suggest the 1 1/16" size. I once tried a pair of 1 3/16 venturi carbs on my 44! It ran about the same as the 1" carbs on the straightaway, and would stall at each turn. I couldn't get the things to work and quickly went back to the 1" KA's. I've seen 1 1/16, 1 1/8, 1 3/16, and 1 1/4" KC's on larger bore service engines out there. So you have to pay attention to what you're getting.
More is not always better. I never try to outsmart the engineers at Mercury. They knew what they were doing, I don't. But that's just me.
