• Floatation

Hey Everyone,
I bought a Tiny Titan that had no floatation in the sponsons and i was wondering if there is a way to put some floatation in the sponsons. I know i could use the foam in a can but the only problem i see with doing that is that if water gets in there then it will sit in the bottom of the boat and it will rot.
Thanks for your input,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Foam is not needed. Are there Plug holes in the back of the sponsons?

There are no plug holes in the back of the sponsons but that doesn't mean I can't put any there .
What floatation would you recommend?
Thanks again,
Dan

Air floats pretty well

There is no need to put floatation in a hydro. If you flip it, enough air is trapped in the nose section to preclude it sinking. Jack

Hi Dan,

The reason you do not want to put foam in the sponsons is because if any water gets trapped by the foam it would cause the rotting to start.

If you are keen to put foam in your boat the suggestion would be to put the foam on inside on the deck.

To do this flip the boat upside down and spray the foam there.

Regards

Another neg on foam - most all foam absorbs water. Water plus wood = rot so it is a no-no in wood boats. And water is heavy. A modest size Boston Whaler, foam filled and unsinkable even when cut in half, will gain a few hundred pounds of water weight in a few years.

Stuff an inner tube in there. White water paddlers have small flotation bags, required on most rivers.

Is there any other option for floatation in the boat besides foam? I like the inner tube idea but if the inner tube was too big over inflation of the tube would put stress on the top and bottom portion of the bow of the boat.
Thanks again,
Dan

I agree with everybody else. The boat will float. And spray foam in a can "Great Stuff" is like a sponge - don't use it.

Option: ~20% Oxygen <80% Nitrogen minute quantities of rare gases known as AIR.

Or you could fill the sucker with ping pong balls :-)

Ping Pong balls is just silly. Now tennis balls would be the hot set up!

Anyway, maybe I'm silly, and a noob, but I have been thinking about a flip, cracked hull, water gets in, boat with pricey Yamato 102 sinking to the bottom.
Maybe I think too much. Check out this http://www.outdoorplay.com/Kayak-Flo...FUjd4AodkmF_gQ. No need to over inflate, just take up some volume with air.

The inner tube does not need to be totally filled.

You could also use a boat bumper too.

Where are you planning to run your boat? Long Pond?

I like the idea of tennis balls and the Kayak floatation bag! I also have a lot of boat bumpers laying around that I could use! Thanks for all the input guys any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.
To answer your question Dew1us, I have a cottage on Lake Erie that I would like to run it. The cottage is near Angola and the place is called Lake Bay I think. I also have a cottage on Lake Ontario. That's where I have run it in the past. But Long Pond is also a good place to go. I think any of those small lakes would be perfect. Another small lake that I would like to run it on is Casadaga Lake or Bear Lake in Chautauqua County.
Thanks again,
Dan
